None of the area’s high school boys golf teams could get on the course until Wednesday, thwarted first by dangerous storms on Monday and the lingering wetness that caused more postponements a day later.
But the sun was out last Wednesday as the Marcellus boys golf team remained undefeated, routing Pulaski 194-255. At Marcellus Golf Club, Jay Colella and Carter Austin both shot 37, but Frank Szczech was right behind them, posting a 38. By contrast, the Blue Devils’ low round came from Chris Olson, who had a 46.
Also playing on Wednesday, Jordan-Elbridge fell to Cazenovia 220-262. Max Bondgren shot a 42 at Millstone, trailing only the Lakers’ Cody Thorp (40) among individuals, but the Eagles saw five Cazenovia golfers post 49 or lower ahead of Cole Melfi (51) and Nate Melfi (52) as Ben Sullivan got a 54 and Jessi Tripp shot 63.
Amid Thursday’s rains at MGC, Marcellus routed Altmar-Parish-Williamstown 199-311, posting the best three rounds of the afternoon. Colella finished with a 36, with Austin notching a 37 to finish one stroke back. Szczech added a 40.
Meanwhile, J-E met up with Solvay, and the Eagles prevailed, 250-258, at Millstone, despite the fact that the Bearcats’ Jon Smolen led all individuals by shooting a 36.
To counter that, J-E had Bondgren shoot a 39 and Sullivan shoot a 44 ahead of Solvay’s Drew Lamont, who had a 48. Then Cole Melfi got a 52 and Nate Melfi a 54 to beat the Bearcats’ trio of Joe King (58), Noah Capella (59) and Joe Sardo (61).
A showdown in local girls golf pitted Marcellus against Westhill last Tuesday afternoon at Tuscarora, and the Mustangs got the best of it, defeating the Warriors 206-223.
Conditions were windy and chilly, and Marcellus had the lone sub-50 round, from Mary Colella, who posted a 47. Her teammate, Ashalin Chunco, shot a season-best 51 as Ellie Masterpole paced Westhill with a 53 and Madeleine Jones contributed a 55.
From there, Marcellus went on to beat Cazenovia 213-237 on a wet Thursday afternoon where Colella’s 47 tied her with the Lakers’ Erin Howles for low individual round, but Chunco improved again to a 49 to put the Mustangs ahead for good.
And before all this, Marcellus prevailed, 208-231, over Chittenango last Monday, where Colella shot a 43 to beat the field by eight shots as Grace Alexander shot a 51 to tie the Bears’ Megan Pierce. Chunco and Erin Hass both shot 57.
Westhill took part in a three-team match Thursday and, with 234, beat East Syracuse Minoa Orange (256), but finished behind Skaneateles, who had 221. Angela Vigliotti led the Warriors with a 58 at Skaneateles Country Club, while the Lakers’ Jenna Field led all individuals with a 53.
West Genesee just managed to avoid the stormy weather last Monday and get in its match against Cicero-North Syracuse at Northern Pines, where the Wildcats took a 186-211 defeat to the Northstars.
Mikaela Riley had one of her best rounds of the spring, posting a 45 that put her third among individuals behind C-NS teammates Morgan Siechen (41) and Abby Ainsworth (43). Kara Kallfelz shot a 51, with Kaitlin Bivens getting a 57 and Hannah Kirk earning a 58.
Then, in Thursday’s 187-229 defeat to Liverpool, Riley shot a 48 in the rain at Liverpool Country Club, but that trailed the Warriors’ sister tandem of Mia Avotins and Natalya Avotins as Mia shot a 37 and Natalya added a 40. Kallfelz finished with a 57, ahead of Kirk (63) and Hannah Bobbett, who had a 61.
