The Cazenovia girls track and field team raised their record to 4-0 with a well-balanced 96-45 victory over a small but talented CBA squad on April 26. The Lady Lakers edged their opponents 48 to 39 on the track but dominated the field events once again, prevailing 48-6 to ensure the overall win. The team took advantage of the best weather of the spring to achieve 58 season-best performances during the meet.
Freshman Chloe Smith led the Lakers on the track, winning the 100 meter (13.5) and 200-meter dash (28.8) events and anchoring the 4×100 meter relay to victory in 54.1 seconds. Kirsten Underwood took second in the 100 while Brenna Hughes and Paige Hunt rounded out a sweep in the 200. Delaney Yates joined Smith, Underwood and Hughes for the relay win. Peyton Basic ran her best 400-meter dash of the season (1:07.6) to earn second place in that event.
Meggie Hart also contributed heavily to the win, capturing the 1500 meter run in a season-best time of 5:07, taking second in 3000 and anchoring the 4×800 meter relay to victory. Molly Hart added a third place in the 3000 and also contributed to the 4×800 win along with Julia Barrett and Emily Mahoney. The Lakers were nearly perfect in the field events sweeping the throws and allow just two places in the jumps. Jamie Joseph won the shot put (29-4.5) with Molly Carges (28-10.5) and Caeli Carroll (25-5) backing her up with season-best efforts. Claire Edwards won the discus at 73-11.5 with Carges (73-5.5) and Tessa Hanskenecht (67-11) in support with their best throws of the spring.
Maddy Gavitt was a double winner in the horizontal jumps, reaching an incredible 35-0 to win the triple jump (just 2.25 inches from her career best set at the state championship meet last year). She also won the long jump at 15-10.5. Katie Robbins earned third in the triple jump with a career best of 31-6.5 while Chloe Smith also had her best-ever long jump (15-5) to place third.
