Up against a side that usually provides a big challenge, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys tennis team kept itself perfect in last Wednesday’s match against West Genesee, rolling past the Wildcats 7-0 to start a four-day stretch that culminated with a 7-0 shutout of Baldwinsville in a first-place CNY Counties League showdown.
WG entered the match with a 6-1 overall record, but didn’t get close in any of the seven matches against F-M. To begin the singles sweep, Riley Ma got a 6-0, 6-1 win over James Plunkett, with Jeremy Zhang shutting out Stefan Atanasov 6-0, 6-0 and Michael Miller having no trouble beating Ryan Joyce 6-1, 6-0.
It didn’t look that different in doubles, either. Chris Lansing and Taran Judge handled Chris Upwood and Alex Argiro 6-0, 6-0, with Ravi and Rohan Dhawan topping Matt Mannara and Jimmy Harter 6-1, 6-1. By those same scores, Joel Farella and Nolan Chiles beat John Northrop and Ahmed Mahmoud as Max Farber-McEntee and Aaron Costanza beat Erik Shanahan and Connor McCrea 6-0, 6-1.
F-M then blanked Liverpool 7-0 on Friday with Ma, Zhang and Tom Miro each winning 6-0, 6-0 singles matches over, respectively, Brandon Davis, Anthony Puma and Caleb Arnold.
Then, in doubles, Lansing and Judge beat Evan Maestri and Ben White 6-1, 6-0. Dilan Judge and Richard Wang topped Jonathan Kline and Brayden Cabrey 6-0, 6-1 as the teams of Dhawan-Dhawan and Chiles-Farella didn’t lose games in either of their matches.
All of this led to the match against B’ville, and little would change, though a couple of matches proved tougher.
Zhang, in first singles, worked two tough sets to beat Antonio Marsallo 6-4, 6-4. David Fernando nearly surrendered the first set, but still beat David Rush 7-5, 6-1 as Miro handled Max Funicello 6-1, 6-2.
Lansing and Taran Judge got the doubles crowd going with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Scott Ferrari and Sam Damato. The Dhawan brothers won, 6-4, 6-2, over Anthony Pompo and Alex Shaban, with Chiles and Farella beating Isiah Demoski and Ryan Shirk 6-2, 6-1. Wang and Dilan Judge handled Kyle Robinson and Alex Taylor 6-1, 6-1.
Also undefeated going into the week, Christian Brothers Academy rolled past Chittenango 5-0 last Monday afternoon, preserving the shutout when, in third singles, David Hoag, two games from defeat, rallied past the Bears’ Mike Ackerman 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Otherwise, Dean Vlassis handled Sean Austin 6-0, 6-1, with Ben Vlassis shutting out Aaron Norman 6-0, 6-0. In doubles, the teams of Tom Daviau and Zach Popp got past Keoni Saturnie and Zach Falkenburg 6-1, 6-4, with Milan Gupta and Shivam Nanavati handling Ben Cyr and Matt Lanphear 6-1, 6-2.
It was much tougher on Tuesday, when CBA confronted Cazenovia and needed success in both singles and doubles to edge past the Lakers 3-2.
Both of the doubles matches went in the Brothers’ favor. Daviau and Popp claimed a tough 6-4, 7-5 decision over Nick Barna and Liam Flannery, with Gupta and Nanavati beating Teddy Coughlin and Griffin Monahan 6-1, 6-4.
Cazenovia’s first singles player, Nate Romig, survived a tough first set and then beat Dean Vlassis 7-5, 6-0, with Orson Sproule beating Hoag 6-2, 6-2. That left it up to Ben Vlassis, and he came through with a 6-1, 6-1 romp over Mitch Romig.
Then CBA beat Manlius-Pebble Hill 4-1 on Thursday. Charlie Mann nabbed the Trojans’ lone point, beating Hoag 6-2, 6-3, but the Vlassis brothers won their singles matches, as did Popp and Daviau, with Gupta and Nanavati getting a 7-5, 6-3 win over Keerthi Martyn and Dan Mezzalingua.
Head-to-head last Tuesday, MPH handled Bishop Grimes 5-0, with Mann taking the closest singles match for the Trojans as he beat the Cobras’ Alex McDonald 6-0, 7-5. Trilok Reddy beat Zach Schell 6-1, 6-1, with Dan Braverman getting a 6-0, 6-4 win over Zed Wiegand.
Both of the doubles matches went handily in MPH’s favor. Nick Jerge and Jeff Bush got past Renny Breazele and Aiden Keenan 6-1, 6-0, with Martyn and Mezzalingua earning a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jeff Wang and Harry Hu.
Then MPH shut out Onondaga 5-0 on Wednesday, with Reddy winning a tough singles match over Dan Kelly 6-3, 6-2 as Braverman blanked Zach Hay 6-0, 6-0 and Mann handled Taylor Featherstone 6-0, 6-1. Martyn and Mezzalingua won in doubles as Bush paired with Goldman for a straight-sets win.
