With superior depth and lots of versatility, the Cazenovia boys track and field team improved to 3-0 on the season last Wednesday at Buckley-Volo Field with a dominant 117-24 victory over Christian Brothers Academy.
Alec Boone, in 11.6 seconds, held off James Pavelchak (11.8) and Sean McPherson (11.9) in the 100-meter dash. Boone, Pavelchak, Jimmy McPherson and Elijah Wellington Harper would run the 4×100 relay in 45.8 seconds and Pavelchak would prevail in the 200-meter dash in 24.5 seconds, where Chad Carges got third place.
On his own, Jimmy McPherson won three races. First, he prevailed in the mile in 5:03.9, pulling away from the field by nearly 12 seconds, and later he took the 3,200-meter run in 11:16.8, with Noah DeRochie second in 11:28.1.
Sean McPherson broke through by winning the 400-meter dash in 55.1 seconds as Sam Deleon (56.2) finished third. Then, in the 4×400 relay, McPherson, paired with Pavelchak, Boone and Chris Race, roared to another victory in 3:46.1.
Justin Gagnon was first in the 110 high hurdles in 18.2 seconds, with Jacob Olkowski second and Nate Spangler third. Moving to the 400 hurdles, Gagnon posted 1:12.3 to finish second behind Jimmy McPherson (1:09.6) as Will Kmetz was third.
Ray Satchwell was first in the triple, going 39’5” to beat Aiden Emoff (36’9”) and Harper (34’5”), and Satchwell cleared 5’4” to win the high jump over Collin Killany and Josh Maxwell (both 5’2”). In the long jump, Satchwell, going 16’11”, finished second behind Boone, who won with 19’2” as Emoff got third place.
Kmetz took his turn at the top in the shot put with a throw of 38’10” ahead of Spangler (37’11 ½”) and Carges (36’7”), while Christian Winkler threw the discus 118’3” to beat Angelo Annotto (110’4) and Kmetz (107’4”). Deleon and Jacob Olkowski both cleared 9 feet in the pole vault.
On that same Wednesday, the Chittenango track and field teams faced Westhill-Bishop Ludden, and though the boys meet was close, the Bears could not quite catch up to the Warriors in a 79-62 defeat.
Mike Capeling won the mile in 4:42 flat, with Ersilio Cerminaro third in 4:55.0, and Capeling went on to take the 800 in 2:07.9 as Dylan Price finished third. Completing his distance racing sweep, Capeling covered the 3,200 in 10:26.1 to pull away from the field as Capeling, Cerminaro, Phlilp Abell and Jacob Blaszkow won the 4×800 in 9:03.4.
Nick Stanton was a close second (11.7 seconds) to Westhill-Ludden’s Tom Howard (11.6) in the 100 sprint and was second in the 200 in 24.4 seconds, but did win the 400 sprint in 54.9 seconds over the Warriors’ Cal Niezabytowski (55.0) as Abell was third in 56.3 seconds. Stanton also won the long jump, going 19’5 ¼”.
Devin Myers was second in the 400 hurdles in 1:04.4 and third in both the triple jump and 110 hurdles. Trevor Conklyn got second place (38’5”) in the shot put, with Diego Prado third in that event before taking second in the discus with a toss of 98’3”. Lucas Spiridilozzi cleared 5’4” to match Westhill-Ludden’s Ben Eassa in the high jump.
In the girls meet, the Bears lost, 108-33, to Westhill-Ludden, Mekenzie Dahlin went 1:08.4 to win the 400 sprint as McKenzie Dombroski claimed the 3,000-meter run in 12:06.5. Dahlin would finish second in the triple jump with a top leap of 27’6”. Aaliyeh Emad got to second place in the high jump, clearing 4’4”.
Kendra Moore was second in the 100 hurdles as Alyssa Kolb took second in the 100 sprint in 14.4 seconds and Emily Montroy was third, matching her finish in the high jump.
Kolb added a second-place finish in the long jump and was third in the triple jump, with Eryn Thompson third in the long jump and second in the pole vault, clearing 7 feet. Courtney Tadros was second in the shot put and Allyson Woodruff took third in the discus.
Chittenango went from there to hosting its big invitational meet on Friday, and Cazenovia was part of it, too, with its boys team picking up eight points.
Gagnon got sixth place in the 110 hurdles in 17.18 seconds. Spangler was eighth in the pentathlon, with Pavelchak 10th in the 100 sprint. Boone, Pavelchak, DeLeon and Sean McPherson were fifth in the 4×400 in 3:43.22.
Winkler, throwing the discus 113’6”, made it to fifth place, with Annotto 11th as Satchwell was fifth in the long jump, going 19’1 ¾”. DeLeon got sixth in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet. Dalton Sevier tied for seventh in the high jump, topping 5’4” as Kmetz was eighth (39’10”) in the shot put.
For the Bears, Blaszkow was sixth in the boys traditional mile run in 4:40.75 before helping Capeling, Price and Caleb Prenoveau take fifth place in the 4×800 in 8:38.59, while Capeling, in the featured Fleet Feet Mile, got 10th place in 4:32.64. Myers was seventh in the long jump (18’11 ¼”) and Stanton ninth as Conklyn finished 10th in the shot put.
Moving to the girls side for Chittenango, Chelsea Lamphere was fifth in the girls mile in 5:36.65 and helped the Bears finish ninth in the girls 4×800. Cerminaro took 11th place in the boys 3,200.
