Unlike some of its league neighbors, including Westhill and Skaneateles, the Marcellus boys golf team chose to keep its program in the spring, at least for this season.
And the warm weather last Monday allowed the Mustangs to get underway, hosting Manlius-Pebble Hill at Marcellus Golf Club and putting together a 199-218 victory over the Trojans.
Jay Colella shot a 37 for nine holes, one behind MPH’s Johnny Gruninger, but while the Trojans’ Nathan Lesch had a 38, it was followed by three Mustangs as Frank Szczech had a 39, Tom Fiacchi a 40 and David Bosak a 41. Carter Austin, with a 42, and Tim Sheridan, with a 43, added further depth.
When things turned cooler and wetter 24 hours later, Marcellus didn’t get bothered by it, instead going to Pine Grove to take on Solvay and rolling past the Bearcats 214-248.
In the battle for individual honors, Austin won out, netting a 38 to finish one shot ahead of Szczech. Tom Smolen would lead Solvay by shooting a 41 as teammate Drew Lamont managed a 42, both of them bettering Fiacchi’s 43.
Jordan-Elbridge opened on that same warm Monday and routed Weedsport 244-316 at Millstone. Max Bondgren shot the low individual round of 45, just ahead of Ben Sulilvan’s total of 46 as Cole Melfi contributed a 50. Steve Tripp finished with a 55.
On Thursday, J-E made it two wins in as many matches, handling Pulaski 251-271. Again playing at Millstone, the Eagles had Sullivan in front with a 43, well clear of Melfi’s 49 as Bondgren finished with a 51, all of them ahead of Caleb Davies, who led the Blue Devils with a 52.
Girls golf teams would get underway, too, with Westhill hosting Oswego last Wednesday afternoon and hanging on for a 234-235 victory over the Buccaneers at Camillus Country Club.
With every shot important to the outcome, Ellie Masterpole shot a 54 to lead the Warriors, one shot behind Oswego’s top individual, Catherine Volkomer. Angela Vigliotti offered support to Masterpole, posting a 58.
Then West Genesee got to face that same Oswego side on Thursday afternoon at Westvale, with the Wildcats prevailing 196-216 as a prelude to its competition against CNY Counties League foes that starts this week with matches against Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool, plus a match with Auburn.
