Each of the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool boys tennis teams would face defeats in their opening CNY Counties League matches of the spring.
At least, in the Northstars’ case, it was able to get on the board during last Wednesday’s 5-2 defeat to West Genesee, doing so in first singles when Connor Milias beat Stefan Atanasov 6-0, 6-0, while Justin Kegebein got a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory over Chris Upwood.
Otherwise, the Wildcats claimed all the points, including a doubles sweep where the teams of Trey Nordin-Abbey-John Barraco, Evan Harbarek-James Coral, Sarosy-Tony Ragohese and Phillip Smith-Rogakeski did not gain a set in any of their matches.
Liverpool, meanwhile, had the toughest possible season-opening assignment last Tuesday afternoon, running up against Fayetteville-Manlius and not making much headway in a 7-0 defeat to the Hornets.
Of the three singles matches, Brandon Davis did best, pushing F-M’s Tom Miro in the third set of a 6-0, 7-5 defeat. Otherwise, Caleb Munski took a 6-0, 6-2 defeat to Jeremy Zhang, with Evan Maestri falling to Riley Ma 6-1, 6-0. The doubles teams of Alex Alejo-Ben White and Andrew Johnson-Jeff Noll lost in two sets.
Two days later, Liverpool had its own match against West Genesee, taking a 6-1 defeat. Maestri would beat Alex Argiro 6-1, 7-5, but Munski and Brandon Davis lost their singles matches, while White and Alejo fell in doubles to James Plunkett and Jimmy Harter 6-3, 6-2.
C-NS faced Baldwinsville on Friday and lost, 6-1, to the Bees. Kegebein shut out Max Funicello 6-0, 6-0, but in first singles Millias could not hold on to an early lead in a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 defeat to Antonio Marsallo, and B’ville swept all of the doubles matches.
