The Jordan-Elbridge Eagles battled the Lakers to a draw on the track, but a dominating 49-1 margin by Cazenovia’s field athletes kept the team unbeaten. The Lady Lakers are 3-0 as they head into a brief lull for the school’s spring break.
Captain Katie Robbins set the tone for the Cazenovia field athletes, winning the pole vault with an 8-6 effort despite the cold, windy conditions. She returned to win the triple jump with a season-best leap of 30 feet, one inch. Teammate Julia Barrett took second in the triple at 28-9, her best of the spring. In total the Lakers posted 54 career or season best performances during the meet. Maddie Gavitt won the long jump at 15-1.5 with Chloe Smith (14-8.5) and Robbins (13-7.5) completing a sweep of the event.
Jamie Joseph and Claire Edwards packed a powerful one-two punch for the Lakers in the throws as Joseph won the shot at 30-3.5 while Edwards captured the discus at 79-4; both season bests. Molly Carges placed second in both events (26-8, 66-0) with Edwards claiming third in the shot and Sunday Kulang achieving a career best of 60-4 to take third in the discus. Carges returned to tie with Paige Hunt for first in the high jump (4-6) with Gavitt third (4-6).
Meggie Hart led the Lakers on the track, winning the 1,500 (5:12.4) and 3,000 (11:26.8) and anchoring the 4×800 to victory in a season-best time. Molly Hart added valuable third place points in both events and also ran a personal best of 2:48.1 in the 4×800 to help Julia Barrett and Jamie Joseph claim the win. Virginia Soler continued her rapid improvement in the 800, winning in 2:56.7, with Emma Wardell taking third. Peyton Basic won the 400 for the second week in a row with new track runner Emily Mahoney claiming second.
The Lakers weren’t able to prevail in either of the hurdle events, but kept it close as Delaney Yates (18.0) and Jackie Gamlen (20.7) went two-three in the 100-meter event while Joseph (1:16.4) and Yates (1:17.1) picked up four points in the 400 meter hurdles. Despite a J-E victory in the 4×400, Joseph, Yates, Barrett and Basic all ran season best times to total 4:39.0 for Cazenovia, their best of the spring.
Chloe Smith was a bright spot for the Lakers in the sprints, earning second in the 100 at 13.2 and fighting valiantly against a talented group of J-E sprinters in the 200. The Eagles also triumphed in the 4×100 in a speedy 52.4 as they outran Cazenovia 20-3 in the three sprint events en route to their 45-42 edge on the track overall.
Despite the rare setback on the track, Cazenovia’s well-balanced field event performance more than made up the difference as the team powered to a 91-46 total for their third straight win of the season. Seventeen different girls scored for the team in the victory.
The Lakers will focus on training in the week ahead as they prepare for their next league contest at CBA on April 26.
