Track and field teams from Westhill-Bishop Ludden and Solvay started against each other in the first meet of the 2017 season last Wednesday afternoon, part of a three-team contest with Altmar-Parish-Williamstown.
The boys meet belonged to the Warriors across the board as it beat the Bearcats 97-73, while also handling APW 106-35 as Solvay did manage to salvage a split by defeating the Rebels 70-67.
Sean Corbett, a state qualifier in indoor track this winter, helped Weshill-Ludden by throwing the shot put 43 feet. Jake Suddaby ran the mile in 4;52 flat as Tom Howard won the 200-meter dash in 24.3 seconds and also claimed the long jump, going 17’4”.
Solvay had plenty of highlights, including those by Jordan Devereaux, who claimed the 100-meter dash in 11.6 seconds to Lamar Flood’s 11.9, and then took the 400-meter dash in 54.2 seconds. Dylon Ewers cleared 5’6” in the high jump as Flood had a top triple jump of 38’11”.
In the girls meet, Westhill-Ludden topped Solvay 85-51 and edged APW 74-63, with the Bearcats falling 85-51 to the Rebels. Zoe Fortin won twice for Westhill-Ludden, going 14’2 ½” in the long jump and unleashing a top triple jump of 31 feet.
The Warriors went 1-2-3 in the 100-meter hurdles, with Alyssa Holstein prevailing in 16.97 seconds. Emily O’Reilly got first place in the 400 hurdles in 1:10.9 ahead of Solvay’s Anastasia LaFlair, who posted 1:13.9. Abby Feyerabend cleared 4’8” and won the high jump.
Liz Kessler, in 2;35.8, beat out teammate Kylie Nowicki (2:36.6) in the 800. Alaina Kenny was second in the 1,500-meter run in 5:24.7, while Mackenzie Powers got second place in the 400 sprint in 1;16.8 and Haylei Coolican was third. Sarah Thompson was second in the pole vault, clearing 7 feet.
Solvay’s lone win came in throwing events as Ashley Bosco tossed the shot put 33’6” and Sabrina Garrett threw the discus 69’5 ½” to beat out Westhill-Ludden’s Haley Mikus (65’5”). Zoe Francemone was second (12’10 ½”) to Fortin in the long jump.
The Bearcats also had Serenity Thomas take second place in the 100 sprint in 13.9 seconds, just behind APW’s Tatyana Scott (13.8), with the same thing happening in the 200 as Thomas finished in 30.3 seconds and Scott (30.2) just ahead of her. Leda Jaquin was second in the 3,000-meter run.
While all this was going on, Marcellus opened its season against Pulaski, and the girls Mustangs were dominant in a 120-21 victory over the Blue Devils, with the boys prevailing by a 115-26 margin.
Helping the Marcellus girls, Mary-Catherine Coon was victorious in the 100 sprint in 13.4 seconds and added a title in the 200 in 28.2 seconds, also taking the high jump by clearing 4’6”. Olivia Bird completed the sprint sweep by winning the 400 in 1:09.6 as Sydney French had a top long jump of 14’5” and first-place triple jump of 28’7”.
Morgan Gould and Liliana Cushman ran together in the 1,500, both of them finishing in 5:33.8 ahead of Crystal Silliman (5:43.6), who would later go 2:49 flat to edge Bird (2:49.1) and win the 800. Gould made it two victories when she took the 3,000 in 12:05.5. Courtney Otis and Hannah Ryan both cleared 6’6’ in the pole vault.
Corrine Bandera needed 20.4 seconds to complete a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 hurdles. Bandera and Coon also helped Macie Szalach and Alaura Cushman the Mustangs take the 4×100 in 56.4 seconds. Szalach, on her own, won the 400 hurdles in 1:19.3. Bird, Otis, Caroline Carlic andViolet Moncavage won the 4×400 in 4:51.8.
Jordan-Elbridge claimed a 74-67 decision over Hannibal in last Wednesday’s boys meet, Marion Quigley was first in the 100 in 12.1 seconds to Nate Jennings’ 12.4, and also won the 200 in 25.1 seconds, again with Jennings (25.6 seconds) behind him. Quigley also claimed the long jump, going 18’2”.
Austin Cassick helped when he swept the throwing events, tossing the discus 97’11” before winning the shot put by going 36’4”. Ethan Kinney was first in the 400 sprint in 55.2 seconds. Hugh Schader went 5:01.5 in the mile to prevail as J-E swept the 4×100 (48.6 seconds), 4×400 (3:45.00) and 4×800 (9:08.7) relays.
It proved even closer in the girls meet between J-E and Hannibal, and with every point counting, the Eagles edged the Warriors 71-70.
