Quickly hitting the heart of a tough spring schedule, the Fayetteville-Manlius track and field teams both won in last Tuesday’s season-opening three-way battle against city foes Corcoran and Nottingham.
In the girls meet, the Hornets, again led by its distance runners, got past the Cougars 80-46 and went from there to handling the Bulldogs 96-28. The F-M boys found similar success, rolling past Corcoran 113-29 and also defeating Nottingham 91-39.
For the F-M girls, Sophia Ryan went 5:00.4 to beat Rebecca Walters (5:08.5) and Alex Villalba (5:09.2) in the 1,500-meter run. Palmer Madsen rolled to first place in the 400-meter dash in 59.1 seconds.
Villalba also was second in the 3,000-meter run in 11:06.4 behind Rebecca Walters, who won in 10:27.7. In the 4×400 relay, Ryan, Madsen, Phoebe White and Susan Bansbach were victorious in 4:20.4 as the Hornets also took the 4×800 in 11:09.9.
Gwen Shepardson rolled to first place in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.3 seconds. Grace Hausladen was first in the 400 hurdles in 1:17.8, with Cady Barns going 27.5 seconds to prevail in the 200-meter dash and also taking the triple jump by going 33 feet 5 inches. Sydney O’Dell was second in the shot put (23’6”) and high jump, where she cleared 4’6”.
Meanwhile, in the boys meet, F-M got a double win from Stefen Mina as he claimed the 400 sprint in 56.4 seconds and needed 1:04 flat to prevail in the 400 hurdles. Mina also helped the Hornets’ 4×400 relay team prevail in 3:51.9.
Patrick Perry, in 4:37.3, pulled away from Joe Walters (4:57.2) and Ben Otis (4:57.8) in the mile, and Perry was second in the 800 (2:24.2), just ahead of Jack Duncanson (2:24.5), but behind Joe Meskos, who won in 2:23.3.
In the 3,200-meter run, Perry finished in 10:25.4, just behind Stephen Otis and his winning 10:25 flat. All of this followed a 4×800 where Perry, Duncanson, Meskos and Walters needed 9:10.1 to take first place.
Ryan Kaczorowski had a top triple jump of 37’3 ¼” and also cleared 4’8” in the high jump, the same as Romello Mitchell, who took his own title in the long jump by going 18’9”. Armando Adrian sprinted to first place in the 200 in 24.3 seconds to edge Corcoran’s Donovan Johnson (24.4 seconds),
Christian Brothers Academy also opened its track season last Tuesday against Skaneateles at Hyatt Stadium, unable to win on either side.
The CBA girls lost, 94-35, to Skaneateles, only winning a pair of races. Lea Kyle went 29.4 seconds to prevail in the 200-meter dash, while Olivia Morganti covered 3,000 meters in 10:37.8 to beat Claire Bargabos (12:10.2) as part of a 1-2 effort. Kyle was second in the 400 sprint and Bargabos second in the 1,500.
The more lopsided boys meet ended with Skaneateles prevailing 108-19, with just two wins in individual races from the Brothers. Dominic Morganti was first in the mile in 4:56.3, with Riley Nash third in 5:20.1 as Brett VanPatten claimed the 200 in 25.3 seconds.
CBA went from there to Saturday’s Cicero-North Syracuse Relays, where in the girls 4×800 Kyle, Bargabos, Deja Jones and Cory Knox finished in 10:25.32 to pull away from the field as West Genesee was second (10:46.61), more than 21 seconds behind. Morganti won the individual 3,200 in 4:57.61.
Jamesville-DeWitt had a bigger presence at C-NS, finishing third in both the boys and girls divisions behind C-NS and Baldwinsville.
In the girls meet, Hannah Butler, Sophia Vinciguerra, Abby Palin and Abby Leavitt won the 1,500 relay with total times of 20:59.84. Butler then paired with Kailee Philleo, Sarah Hildreth and Amanda Semmel to take third in the 4×400 in 4:36.28 as the Rams also got fifth place (11:13.58) in the 4×800 and sixth in the sprint medley.
Gabrielle Tanksley cleared 8 feet to win the individual pole vault and took team honors with Eva Wisniewski, who topped 7 feet. Monica Hernandez-Olivera and Emma Clardy paired up to take third (38.34 seconds) in the 100 hurdles. Lauren Nandal and Carolyn Kolceski got third place in the shot put with total throws of 54’10”. Hernandez-Olivera and Cara Glazier were fourth in the high jump, clearing a combined 8’6”.
J-D’s boys were victorious in the 4×800, where Patrick Dye, Sam Glisson, Fidel Martinez and Kaleel Boykins needed 8:47.89 to rout a field where no one else broke the nine-minute mark. Alex Le and Chris Blust were second in the pole vault, clearing a combined 21’6” as Tully won by topping 22 feet.
Trey Greene went 19’3” in the long jump to finish second as he and Murad Amurlayev were also second (37’10”) to C-NS (38’3”) in the team portion. In the triple jump, Ryan Bradford and Markos Petkopoulos got fourth place with total leaps of 73’9 ½”, while Greene and Sabri Hafizuddin topped 10’6” between them for third place in the high jump.
Elsewhere, Bradford and Petkopoulos were third in the boys 110 hurdles in a combined 33.65 seconds. Amurlayev, Mike Potamianos, Haberle Conlon and Trey Greene were fourth in the 4×100 in 46.84 seconds.
Joe Esposito’s third-place discus throw of 103’11” led to a fourth-place team finish with James Richer as he heaved it 80 feet. Petkopoulos and Jeremy Wells were sixth in the 400 hurdles as J-D was sixth (4:03.06) in the sprint medley.
