In between all the wet stretches of weather, it warmed up, and dried up, long enough for the East Syracuse Minoa and Jamesville-DeWitt track and field teams to open their respective spring campaigns on the first Monday of April.
ESM’s activity involved a three-team meet against Fowler and Auburn, one where the Spartans dominated on the girls end, prevailing 123-17 over the Falcons and 114-27 over the Maroons.
Sweeping the field events, the ESM girls had Mia Montgomery go 14 feet 10 inches to tie Sophie Hartz in the long jump and, on her own, with the triple jump with a top attempt of 34’1 ½”. Lindsey Crego threw the discus 105’9” and claimed the shot put with a toss of 30’6 ½”.
Jennah Ferrari cleared 5’1” to win the high jump, while Alexis Garn topped 7’6” in the pole vault to beat Amanda Szatanek (7 feet) and Ferrari, who was third.
Mackenzie Bourdon, who was second in the shot put, won twice on the oval, claiming the 100-meter hurdles in 16.9 seconds and the 400 hurdles in 1:16 flat. Sarah Tingley and Marina Lopez each ran 3,000 meters in 13:08.0, with Lopez second in the 1,500-meter run as Kat Boland (1:06.4) edged Jacinta Hensinger (1:06.5) in the 400-meter dash.

Though it was a bit closer in the boys meet, ESM beat Auburn 88-52 while taking out Fowler 125-15. Jesse Hodge claimed a pair of events, clearing 9’6” to win the pole vault and going 55.9 seconds to finish first in the 400 sprint. It was pretty much the same in the boys meet, J-D getting a 117-24 win over Fulton. David Fikhman set the tone with wins in the 200 (23.2 seconds) and 400 (54.9 seconds) sprints, with Mike Potamianos going 11.6 seconds to take the 100.
