For a program accustomed to challenging for titles every spring, the Skaneateles boys lacrosse team is in a bit of a drought.
Not since 2010 have the Lakers earned a Section III championship, and the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s switch from three to four classes didn’t help, for though Skaneateles moved to Class D, so did the likes of Cazenovia, LaFayette, Westhill and Christian Brothers Academy.
Thus, the challenge for for long-time Lakers head coach Ron Doctor remains a large one, and Skaneateles got an early start on that 2017 campaign last Saturday when it hosted General Brown and struggled plenty on defense, though it still beat the Lions 15-11.
General Brown had played two nights earlier, falling to Weshtill 14-6, in large part because it fell behind 6-1 in the first quarter and never recovered. The Lakers couldn’t match the Warriors’ quick start, only leading 3-2 at the end of the opening period.
Though it could convert often, Skaneateles also gave up plenty, so while it led 9-6 at halftime, it could not feel too safe. A scoreless third quarter only added to the nerves, and the Lakers needed a big outburst in the closing minutes to match GB’s late charge.
Reggie Buell anchored the attack with six assists to go with a pair of goals. Patrick Major scored four times, with John Danforth getting three goals and one assist. Pat Hackler added two goals as Will McGlynn, Tristan Custer, Matt Goetzmann and Jeremy Castle got one goal apiece.
In goal, Scott Oschner recorded 12 saves, but GB still found gaps in the Skaneateles defense. Luke Rogers, with three goals and one assist, and Bryce Johnson, with two goals and three assists, paced the Lions.
On Tuesday night, Skaneateles hosts Mynderse Academy, but then has a big test Thursday when LaFayette pays a visit to Hyatt Stadium before Saturday’s home game against Cortland.
