The West Genesee girls indoor track and field team continued its steady climb by pushing into third place in last Saturday’s morning session of the George Constantino Memorial Invitational at SRC Arena.
With 104 points, the Wildcats finished third behind Liverpool (115 points) and Jamesville-DeWitt (111 points), while Marcellus got sixth place with 38 points and Solvay (21 points) tied for eighth.
Carly Benson prevailed for WG in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:48.88, more than 10 seconds ahead of the field, and won again when she covered 1,000 meters in 3:04.31, nearly five seconds ahead of J-D’s Hannah Butler (3:09.15) as Amanda Lowther was fifth in 3:23.99. Benson, Kelsey Fox, Lauren Ferris and Abigail Kuppinger were third in the 4×200 relay in 1:54.66, with Marcellus seventh in 2:01.93.
Emily Young needed 1:40.99 to beat Liverpool’s Windsor Ardner (1:44.34) by more than three seconds in the 600-meter run, where Lowther was sixth in 1:49.90. Megan Delia conquered the 300-meter dash in 44.25 seconds to beat out Cazenovia’s Olivia Catania (44.74 seconds) and the field.
Delia contended in the triple jump, finishing second with a leap of 33 feet 6 inches behind Cazenovia’s Maddy Gavitt (34’2 ¾”.), and also was third in the long jump, going 15’8” as Fox (14’9 ½”) finished seventh.
Young, paired with Mia Mitchell, Kendall Dombroske and Taylor Rech, went 10:14.78 to beat J-D (10:45.23) by more than half a minute and win the 4×800 relay as Marcellus got fifth place in 11:40.42. WG was fourth in the 4×400 relay in 4:31.35, with Marcellus seventh in 4:56.87.
Mitchell was third in the 3,000-meter run in 10:55.93, with Rech (11:14.12) in fourth place. Madalyn Benson (9.88 seconds) and Anna Chwiejczak (9.93 seconds) were sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 55-meter hurdles.
Marcellus saw Mary Catherine-Coon clear 4’8” in the high jump to finish second behind Liverpool’s Meghan Milazzo (5 feet), while Grace Coon was fourth, clearing 4’8” and Mitchell was sixth (4’6”) on WG’s side. Courtney Otis cleared 7 feet to finish sixth in the pole vault.
Mary-Catherin Coon got third place in the 55-meter dash in 7.83 seconds, three spots ahead of WG’s Kelsey Fox (7.96 seconds) in sixth place, while Grace Coon was fifth in the 300 in 47.20 seconds. The Mustangs also had Liliana Cushman finish sixth in the 3,000 (12:23.01) and eighth in the 1,500.
Solvay’s Ashley Bosco won the weight throw with a top toss of 30’6”, while teammate Sabrina Garnett finished fourth by going 25’1 ½”. Katie Harrington was fourth in the 55 hurdles in 9.85 seconds. Jordyn Willsey made it to eighth place in the 3,000. Marcellus had Michaela Godbold earn eighth place in the shot put with a toss of 23’5 ½”.
Meanwhile, in the boys edition of the Constantino Invitational morning session, Marcellus, with 68 points, beat out West Genesee (62 points) for fifth place. Solvay had 11 points as Liverpool (122 points) easily claimed team honors.
During a 1-2 sweep of the boys high jump, the Mustangs saw Sean Raymond win by clearing 6 feet, half a foot better than Quimonei Bell-Hunter, who was second by clearing 5’6” as Solvay’s Dylon Ewers was sixth and Marcellus had Michael Welch tie for seventh.
Also, Raymond was third in the 1,000, just missing out on the runner-up spot with Liverpool’s T.J. Praschunus though both finished in 2:49.04, and Raymond got fifth place in the 55 hurdles in 9.17 seconds and Sam Stearns cleared 11 feet in the pole vault for third place.
Caleb Wetherell made it to second place in the triple jump, going 38’10 ½” to only trail Central Square’s Erich Metz (42’3 ½”). Matt Strempel, in 1:29.19, was second to Liverpool’s Stephen Schulz (1:24.68) in the 600, where Welch was eighth. Strempel also got fifth place in the mile in 4:46.36, with Ethan Mosure seventh in 4:48.79.
Mike Provvidenti was third in the 300 in 38.48 seconds, ahead of Solvay teammates Jordan Devereaux (38.77 seconds) and Dylon Ewers (39.65 seconds), who were fourth and sixth, respectively
For West Genesee, the big moment came in the 3,200-meter run, where David Leff prevailed in a swift 9:51.07 and Sean Byrnes was second in 10:31.93 as Mosure (11:17.95) was sixth for Marcellus as Luke Norstad took eighth place in the weight throw, going 34’7 ½”.
Leff, Byrnes, Russ Graziano and Ryan Dunning were second (8:57.49) to Liverpool (8:43.83) in the 4×800. Moving to the 4×200, WG was third as Esisas Brumfield, Andrew Berry, Joe Francisco and Javier Monseratte post 1:38.36, not far from J-D’s winning time of 1:36.39. Francisco got sixth place (35’5 ½”) in the triple jump.
Monserrate was fifth (18’4”) and Griffin Dombroske seventh (17’11 ¼”) in the long jump. Dombroske, Joe Parisi, Tim Huppman and Paul Stannard ran the 4×400 in 3:56.22 for second place, though Liverpool won in 3:38.14.
The Wildcats also had Berry get fifth place in the 55 sprint in 6.77 seconds and Graziano take fifth (1:31.25) in the 600 as Brumfield was seventh in the 300. Cole Nowark was sixth in the shot put with a throw of 38’3”.
