The West Genesee wrestling team would face Syracuse’s Institute of Technology Central last Wednesday night, and led from start to finish, defeating the Eagles by a 60-18 margin.
It started with Patrick Ivery, at 120 pounds, pinning Nazir Smith in 86 seconds, one more second than it took for Tanner Buza (126 pounds) to pin Jose Orocho. Two more falls quickly followed as Brady Ryan (138 pounds) finished off Suarez Simpson in 43 seconds and Cole Saxon (145) pinned Mario Melendez with six seconds left in their bout.
A fifth pin came from Devin Earl at 160 pounds as he got his fall over Adramir Kenneh late in the first period. In a tough 170-pound bout, Victor Elias got past Abendigo Johnson in a 6-4 decision.
To close out the match, WG won four straight bouts. Randell Ouimet (285 pounds) held off Young Calvin 3-1 as Nate Wade, at 99 pounds, pinned Jose Montalvo in 3:34. Both Vincent Calabria (106 pounds) and Ejarian Burgin (113 pounds) claimed forfeits.
West Genesee entered the Fallen Heroes Tournamen at Canastota and recorded a fourth-place finish with 160 points as the host Canastota Raiders, with 250 points, held off CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt (233.5 points) for the top spot.
Though none of the WG wrestlers reached the finals, five of them finished third. Jordan Cushman, at 113, did so by pinning Canastota’s Jason Schermerhorne early in the third period, with Earl pinning another Raiders wrestler, Dalton Domenicone, for third place at 145.
Elias, at 160, bet Robert Shepard (Chittenango) 9-4 in his consolation bracket, while Chandler McEvan (182 pounds) edged Canastota’s Andy Marshall 1-0 for third place and, at 220 pounds, Ahmed Wady pinned yet another Raiders wrestler, Mike Leibl, late in the first period to get to third place.
Wade (99) and Ivery (120) both recorded fourth-place finishes, while Ouimet (220), Calabria (106), Shaun Sakran (285 pounds) and Griffin Sasso (170) each finished fifth. Brady Ryan (132 pounds) and Michael Mesa (285) had sixth-place efforts.
