Improving to 10-2 on the season, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls volleyball team jumped all over Mexco in last Friday’s match, the Red Rams taking the first set 25-4 and then dominating the next two sets, too, by 25-8 and 25-9 margins over the Tigers.
Nearly a set’s worth of points – 23 – were gained by aces, eight of them by Lexie Gambacorto. Amy Shen had five aces to go with a team-best seven kills, while Julia Cavanaugh and Alexandria Payne both had three aces and combined for 11 kills. Shen also had six digs.
Meanwhile, on J-D’s back line, Alex Frank picked up 16 assists, but Eva Dougherty helped her, earning seven assists. Carlene Torrens (three kills), Kathryn Arendt (five digs) and Madeline Ferris (two aces, four digs) helped the Rams, too.
When Fayetteville-Manlius took on Liverpool last Tuesday night, it had a chance to get out in front, only to lose a close first set to the Warriors 26-24. From there, the Hornets went on to drop the second set 25-15, and though it won the third set 25-19, F-M could not quite get the match to the limit, dropping the final set by a 25-21 margin as Liverpool completed a sweep, having won the earlier meeting Sept. 20.
Paige Hulbert led the Hornets with 13 kills, adding five digs. Saara Vahtola had nine kills and four digs, with Jessica Burhle adding eight kills, two assists and two aces. Alexandra Buhrle had six kills and two digs as Erianna Madill managed 35 assists, three kills and two aces. Ellen Burhle gained seven digs.
Two nights later, F-M beat Corcoran, also in four sets. The Hornets won each of the first two sets by margins of 25-12 and 25-16, only to drop the third set 25-22 before outlasting the Cougars 25-21 in the fourth to end it.
While Madill continued to anchor the back line, Vahtola managed 13 kills and seven digs, with Hulbert getting 12 kills and six digs. Ellen Burhle had six digs to go with her three kills. Alexandra Burhle managed six kills as Jessica Burhle put together four kills and three aces. Emma Williams had three kills.
Bishop Grimes returned to the win column last Tuesday night, taking four sets to defeat Jordan-Elbridge. After a 25-14 defeat in the opening set, the Cobras regrouped and won the second and fourth sets by equal 25-17 margins, with a 25-19 third set in between.
In addition to her 23 assists, Samantha Houck served up eight aces. Bri Squier contributed five aces to go with 12 kills as Audrey Hathaway added four aces. Kendall Mancuso amassed six kills, nine digs and three blocks, with Raquel McDonald also earning six kills and Sarah Snavlin earning five kills. Maria Canzano earned eight digs.
This set up a tougher match for Grimes Thursday night against Marcellus, which it lost in straight sets 25-12, 25-14, 25-17 to fall to 6-9 on the season.
Squier got eight kills, with Houck getting five aces and six assists as Becca Vinciquerra managed eight digs, Mancuso (six digs) and Canzano (five digs) helping out on the back line. For the Mustangs, Olivia Quick had 16 assists and Julia Piorkowski had five aces.
Fayetteville-Manlius saw its boys volleyball team run up against undefeated Cicero-North Syracuse last Thursday night, unable to grab a set from the Northstars in a 25-17, 25-15, 25-14 defeat.
Jacob Rhea still managed eight kills to lead the Hornets, with Ryan Boshart adding five kills and seven digs. Dean Assenza got five digs as Cade Collum and Jack Fuller both had four kills and combined for five blocks. Jack Grifo had three kills and Christopher Perry produced 22 assists.
On the C-NS side, Connor Millias had 33 assists, often feeding it to Josh Bigford (13 kills) and Trevor Caviness (10 kills) on the front line.
