For the Liverpool girls volleyball team, another chance was offered to upend Baldwinsville when it ventured to the Baker High School Gym last Thursday night to take on the 10-0 Bees.
And while that did not take place, the Warriors, at the very least, put a dent into the Bees by claiming the only set anyone has won against B’ville in CNY Counties League matches this fall before falling in four sets.
Having lost the first set 25-15, Liverpool began to fight back and, in the second set, pulled out a 25-23 decision, evening the match and, for a moment, worrying the Bees – but that moment did not last too long.
Angry at the rare set loss, B’ville took it out on the Warriors 25-9 in the third set. Liverpool made the fourth set a lot closer, but could not quite take the Bees to the wire and settled for a 25-20 defeat.
Caitlyn Metrick finished with 10 kills, five assists and 13 digs as Karlie King earned 13 kills and seven digs. Sophia Vangelov gained 11 kills and six digs as Katie Boak matched Metrick’s total of 13 digs. Ashley Teixeira had eight digs.
B’ville, meanwhile, featured 38 assists from Maddie Stone, who added eight kills as Michelle Voyer (15 kills, 16 digs) and Kiannah Titus (11 kills, three digs) paced the front line and Skyler Parrow-Strong had 19 digs.
Two nights earlier, Liverpool had completed a regular-season sweep of Fayetteville-Manlius, a team it beat in three sets on Sept. 20. Here, the Warriors pulled out a key 26-24 win in the first set and won the second 25-15, and though it lost the third set 25-19, Liverpool closed it out, 25-21, in a tense fourth set.
Boak and Abby Anderson each earned nine kills, with Boak adding four blocks. Metrick put together eight kills, eight assists, two aces and four digs as Vangelov had 13 assists, three kills and four blocks. Madison Lapointe served up seven aces, plus five kills. Tori Bedelak gained three kills as King and Makenzie Stonebarger each managed three aces and Anna Salamino finished with four digs.
Cicero-North Syracuse started its week by sweeping Corcoran 25-13, 25-19, 25-12 last Tuesday night. Sharlene Richards set the tone, earning seven aces, eight kills and six digs as Grace Nicolini added six kills and two aces.
Madelyn Murray and Savannah Ciciarelli both got four kills, with Ciciarelli adding six digs. Kim Barry had five digs to go with her three kills, while Jessica Barry notched three aces. Emily Overend gained four aces and Kailyn VanAuken finished with four assists.
That set up a key match Thursday between 7-4 C-NS and West Genesee, but the Northstars never got a chance to settle into the match, dropping the first set 25-19 and the second set 25-14 before the Wildcats closed it out, 25-20, in the third set.
Jessica Barry still managed 16 assists, plus five kills and nine digs. Olivia Johnson had a season-best six kils, plus five digs, while Olivia Salvador notched 10 digs and Kim Barry six digs to go with five kills. Murray and Nicolini had three kills apiece.
Moving to boys volleyball, Cicero-North Syracuse maintained its perfect mark when it hosted Central Square last Wednesday and, in three sets, took apart the Redhawks 25-8, 25-18, 25-14. Never seriously threatened, the Northstars saw Josh Bigford put away 12 kills and Justin Kegebein earn eight kills, to go with four aces.
Trevor Caviness had five kills, just ahead of Robert Patzer and Dylan Gesser, with four kills apiece. Connor Millias, with 21 assists, and Tristen Cummings, with 15 assists, ably split back-line duties, with Joe D’Agostino (four digs) and Trent Caviness (three digs) working on the back line.
A night later, at Fayetteville-Manlius, C-NS kept rolling with a 25-17, 25-15, 25-14 sweep of the Hornets. Millias managed 33 assists, an average of 11 per set, and added six kills, only less than Bigford (13 kills) and Caviness (10 kills), with Kegebein and Patzer getting five kills apiece and Kegebein earning a team-best three aces.
Then, in Saturday’s match against visiting Canisius, from Buffalo, the Northstars sought its 12th win in a row against a tough Crusaders squad that had just swept Baldwinsville the night before.
And Canisius would stop C-NS, too, claiming a close first set 25-21 and then taking the next two sets by 25-17 and 25-15 margins. Millias still had 25 assists and six digs, while Bigford earned nine kills and three blocks. Caviness added six kills, with Patzer adding five kills and Kegebein getting four kills and four digs.
Liverpool’s boys volleyball team would have its own match against Central Square on Friday night, but fall in five sets. The Warriors won the first set 27-25 and, after a 26-24 defeat in the second set, won another tight battle 25-22 to grab the third set.
But it was the Redhawks rallying to take the fourth and fifth sets by equal 25-21 margins, negating Trevor Morrow’s 13 kills and Connor Jones’ six kills as Frank Consentino got 22 assists, Will Karins 14 digs and Brendan Lee six digs, plus three aces. For Central Square, Bailey Baumbach earned 18 kills and Cooper Colesante did everything, earning 34 assists, six kills, blocks, three digs and two aces.
