With three race wins and three school records, the Skaneateles girls swim team had quite a presence during last weekend’s Onondaga High School League championship meet at Mexico.
And it didn’t take long for the Lakers to make an impact. The 200-yard medley relay team of Lily Buchholz, Rose Keady, Leah King and Ashley Drotar finished in one minute, 57.42 seconds to set a school record and beat runner-up Christian Brothers Academy (1:59.22) by nearly two seconds.
Then King, on her own, broke the school mark in the 200 individual medley in 2:21.39, finishing a close second in the race to Mexico’s Jessie Faulkner (2:20.96). Later in the meet, King would also finish second in the 500 freestyle in 5:32.44 behind J-D’s Amelia Hesler, who pulled away to win in 5:21.53.
Meanwhile, a third Skaneateles school record was established by Keady in the 100 breaststroke, where her time of 1:11.07 was enough to fend off Faulkner (1:11.91) and win that race. Keady added a sixth-place finish in the 200 IM (2:33:48) behind King.
Buchholz’s big moment came in the 100 freestyle, where in a time of 57.76 seconds she hit the wall at nearly the same time as Auburn’s Kennedy Wilson, who was second in 57.77 seconds, just one-hundredth of a second behind. Later, Buchholz contributed a fourth-place effort in the 100 backstroke in 1:07.31.
Grace Femano was inches ahead of Buccholz in the 100 backstroke, taking third place in 1:07.17, where Oswego’s Caitlin Gorton won in a swift 1:00.31, while Femano posted 1:01.15 in the 100 freestyle.
A day earlier, in the OHSL diving competition, the Lakers’ Gabriella Capozza finished ninth with 310.3 points. Kyra Cottrill was 10th (278.0 points) and Carlee Pitman got 12th place (247.35 points) behind CBA’s Sam Lanzafame, who beat the field with 424.6 points.
Skaneateles would take a 7-3 record into Tuesday’s meet against Auburn before returning to J-D Thursday to face the Red Rams in the regular-season finale.
