The Bishop Grimes boys soccer team started its week with a visit to Tyburn Academy last Monday that turned into the most lopsided victory of the season for the Cobras, who blanked the Crusaders 6-0.
Scoring three times in each half, the Cobras spread around its production. Only Connor Alexander had two goals, with Paul Kim and Deng Mawein each earning one goal and one assist. Jeff Dargiewicz and David Mo found the net, too, as Frank Zhang contributed an assist.
Grimes looked for its third win in a row Thursday against Faith Heritage, a team it beat 3-2 earlier this season. This second encounter had a different outcome, the Cobras falling to the Saints 2-1 in overtime.
Not caring that Faith Hertiage just handed unbeaten Bishop Ludden its first loss of the season earlier in the week, the Cobras gained a quick 1-0 lead on Jake Zona’s goal, assisted by Conor Alexander, but for the rest of the game the Saints would keep Grimes out.
By halftime, it was 1-1, and it stayed that way until Faith put in the game-winner in the first OT period. Zack Beckhusen and Ezekiel Jackson had one goal apiece. With the loss, Grimes fell to 8-6 ahead of Tuesday’s game with Manlius-Pebble Hill and Friday’s regular-season finale against Tully.
MPH visited Tully last Tuesday night, and even with a strong defensive effort, the Trojans still lost, 1-0, to the Black Knights, who prevailed in a close call similar to their Sept. 12 meeting.
That first meeting had ended 2-1 in Tully’s favor, and it was apparen that the second meeting would stay close, especially with MPH’s defense clamping down and holding the Black Knights to a handful of opportunities.
However, in one of those rare attacks during the first half, Tully’s Aaron Hughes scored off feeds from Brendan Lyon and Jakob Moss, something the Trojans could not answer despite having ample time to pull it off. Black Knights goalie Joe Crawford made three saves to preserve the shutout.
Back home on Friday afternoon, MPH met Fabius-Pompey, a team it lost to, 3-0, on Sept. 14. The Trojans had a much better outing this time, and nearly won it, but had to settle for a 2-2 draw with the Falcons.
F-P had a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to Joe Alnutt’s goal, but after the break MPH broke through by having Josh Hutko and Sam Goldman earn unassisted goals to counter a second tally from Alnutt. Then it held on through 20 minutes of overtime thanks to Stew Falso, who earned seven saves
