For all of the positive aspects of moving from a spring to fall schedule – better weather, better course conditions – the one big drawback for the Skaneateles boys golf team would come at the end, at least for those who wanted to go a long way.
Following Tuesday’s Section III fall tournament at Timber Banks, those golfers who had top finishes in that event would have to wait nearly eight months for the state qualifier at Colgate University’s Seven Oaks course in Hamilton, where it could interfere with other spring sports.
In any case, Skaneateles headed to that sectional tournament following a strong regular season, though it did contain some setbacks near the end, including last Wednesday afternoon’s 207-214 defeat to the Oswego Buccaneers.
It marked the second consecutive home defeat for the Lakers after falling to CBA 227-240 on Sept. 23. Here, the scores were better, but not the outcome as Bryce Hourigan led Oswego with a 37, two shots better than Ty Jones, who again paced Skaneateles.
Even with those defeats, Skaneateles finished comfortably ahead of CBA, Tully, LaFayette and East Syracuse Minoa Orange in the OHSL Liberty/Patriot division standings, and now would find out how it would handle things with a sectional team title at stake.
