Having gone through every possible test in the first half of the regular season, the Skaneateles girls soccer team was ready to get a bit of a respite, in terms of the level of competition.
Hosting Pulaski last Tuesday night at Hyatt Stadium, the Lakers settled matters in the first half, scoring five times and having the freedom to ease up the rest of the way during a 6-0 shutout of the Blue Devils.
Raenah Campbell added two more goals to her season total, while Maddie Peterson also scored twice. Grace Dower and Tess Peterson both got one goal and one assist, with assists also credited to Shay McCarthy and Sarah Bailey.
Skaneateles went back on the road Thursday night to take on Chittenango, and this proved far more difficult, but the Lakers did enough to beat the Bears 2-1 in overtime and improve its overall record to 6-3-1.
Each side scored once in the first half. Then that 1-1 tie lingered, through a scoreless second half as the Lakers put pressure on Chittenango goalie Eva Dardaris, but she kept making big stops on the way to 11 saves.
Just as stingy, Skaneateles turned back the Bears as Grace Kush ran her total to seven saves. Then a goal in the first OT period got the Lakers in front, and it stayed there as Maddie Peterson ended up assisting on both goals, one by Tess Peterson, the other by Grace Buchholz.
A Route 20 rivalry gets renewed on Wednesday night when Skaneateles hosted Auburn a day before taking on Solvay.
