All through the years, the Cazenovia girls volleyball team has enjoyed many a clash with Skaneateles to see which Lakers side had net superiority.
At least now, the rivalry swings in Cazenovia’s favor, especially after last Tuesday night’s match where it visited Skaneateles and survived a tense opening set to eventually prevail in a sweep.
That first set nearly went in Skaneateles’ favor, but once Skaneateles took it, 25-23, it had an easier time in the sets that followed, prevailing by margins of 25-11 and 25-18 thanks to a deep, powerful front line.
Molly Carges (nine kills), Morgan Hodinger (seven kills) and Danielle Tedesco (five kills) shared that front-line responsibility as Lauren Lyons had 17 assists and Maleigha Ellithorpe six assists, plus seven digs. Hodinger added six digs and Lindsay Lawson produced three kills.
For Skaneateles, MiaGrasso and Emily Baldwin each got four kills, while Jessica Patalino was held to three kills. Emma Goodell managed 13 digs as Cassidy Pitman earned six assists and Sarah Delasin got five assists.
Back home at Buckley Gym Thursday night, J-E met Cazenovia, and earned another victory, though it took four sets to beat the Eagles. After a 25-10 first-set rout, the Lakers were upended 25-22 in the second set and found itself even.
That didn’t last for long, though, as the Lakers tore through a 25-11 third set and won the fourth 25-19 to close it out. Ellithorpe earned 16 assists and four aces as Carges served up nine aces to go with her team-best seven kills.
Hodinger finished with five kills and three aces, while Tedesco got four kills and two blocks. Lyons picked up five assists and three aces. Sarah Dickinson contributed three kills as Joanna Seeley and Mairin Rogers earned two kills apiece.
Those wins pushed Cazenovia’s record to 7-1, as it faced a big test Tuesday at Jamesville-DeWitt in its only scheduled match this week.
