Almost by himself, Ty Jones was responsible for the Skaneateles boys golf team’s biggest win of its first fall campaign.
Going up against Christian Brothers Academy in a first-place OHSL Liberty/Patriot division showdown Sept. 2 at Drumlins, the Lakers counted on Jones to deliver his best round of the season, which allowed Skaneateles to edge the Brothers 216-217.
Nearly matching par, Jones shot a 36 for nine holes, which beat the best three CBA golfers by five shots as Steve Fournier, Jack Lester and David Gross each shot 41.
Still, Jones needed some help, and received it from Carter Stiegel and Kenny Peterson, who each finished with 42. They, along with Michael Murphy (45), finished ahead of CBA’s Chris Bushnell (46) and Mike Santoro (48), while Jake Reed clinched the win with by shooting 50, exactly the score he needed.
Following the Labor Day weekend, Skaneateles went back down Route 20 to take on LaFayette at Orchard Valley. Here, the Lakers’ depth proved too much as it won by a comfortable 211-241 margin, even though Jones, who shot a 39, was one shot behind the Lancers’ Thomas Long for individual honors.
All of this leads to the busiest week of the Lakers’ season, with four matches in five days against Westhill (who also moved from a fall to spring schedule), Auburn, Cortland and Homer, with the match against the Maroons a chance to start a neighborhood rivalry already quite present in sports like ice hockey and lacrosse.
