If everything worked out just as the Cazenovia girls track and field team wanted at Thursday’s Section III Class B-1 championships at Westhill,, it would put an end to the three-year reign of its fellow Lakers from Skaneateles.
That proved too tall of a task, though, and instead Cazenovia took third place with 101.33 points. Skaneateles, aided by a relay sweep and dominance in sprints, won with 144 points, holding off host Westhill-Bishop Ludden, who was second with 135 points.
Clara Rowles got Cazenovia into the win column on the oval, covering 3,000 meters in 10 minutes, 59.80 seconds, nearly half a minute ahead of Westhill-Ludden’s Genny Corcoran (11:23.62) at the finish line.
Meggie Hart won, too, going 7:25.89 to dominate the 2,000-meter steeplechase, with Westhill-Ludden’s Haylei Coolican (7:47.77) more than 21 seconds behind. Mya Walters was sixth, in 8:30.78, with Adrien Owens seventh in 8:37.78.
Before that, Rowles covered 1,500 meters in 4:54.02, but finished second to CBA eighth-grader Olivia Morganti (4:48.87) as Meggie Hart gained third place in 5:00.47. It was nearly the same in the 800-meter run, where Hart was second in 2:26.32 and Maria Stalder was third (2:27.59), both of them trailing Skaneateles’ Juila Willcox, who won in 2:23.66.
Maddy Gavitt nearly swept the jumping events. She went 15 feet 10 inches to take the long jump over CBA’s Kiana Ferguson (15’7 ½”),while Jess Macheda was fifth, going 15’ ¼”, and Katie Robbins was seventh, going 14’11 ½” as Tori Fischer was 10th.
In the triple jump, Gavitt went 32’9 ½”, beating everyone except CBA’s Elissa Kempisty, who won with 34 feet. Robbins, seventh in the triple jump (29’7 ¼”), landed in fifth place in the pole vault, topping 8’6” as Gavitt (8 feet) had ninth place.
Jamie Joseph’s big push came in the shot put, where with a throw of 32’2 ¼” she finished second to Marcellus’ Johanna Sylcox, who won with 32’11 ½”. Joseph also got 11th place in the discus (69’7”) as Fischer was ninth, going 72’8”.
In the 4×400 relay, Stalder, Joseph, Mya Walters and Julia Barrett gained third place in a time of 10:24.56. Cazenovia’s boys track team would pick up 41 points in its portion of the sectional B-1 meet, settling into sixth place in a nine-team field. Westhill-Ludden won it, needing 143 points to fend off a challenge from CBA, who got 125 points for second place.
Alec Boone contended in all of the sprints, going 11.53 seconds to finish second behind CBA’s Tom SanGiacomo in the 100, and then repeating that feat in the 200 by finishing in 23.53 seconds, well off SanGiacomo’s winning 22.75.
Boone paired with Jake Robbins, Elijah Wellington-Harper and Dan McKillop to get third place in the 4×100 relay in 46.19 seconds, just behind CBA (45.73 seconds) and Westhill-Ludden (45.82 seconds). Boone, Robbins, Brendan Coffey and Hunter Sattler were sixth in the 4×400 in 3:43.98.
