While the Onondaga High School League girls golf regular season may have belonged to Jamesville-DeWitt, its neighbors from Christian Brothers Academy rose to the top once the post-season got underway.
In last Wednesday’s OHSL Tournament at Woodcrest Golf Club, the Brothers, led by individual runner-up Megan McKeen, beat out the Red Rams for the team title, while East Syracuse Minoa saw Audrey Rivers pick up third-place honors.
When CBA and J-D met in the regular season April 19 at Butternut Creek, the Red Rams, on its shorter home course, won 161-168, but the longer Woodcrest layout benefited the Brothers since it had played home matches on the longer Drumlins layout.
In the final team standings, CBA had 417, with J-D trailing the duo of Skaneateles and Marcellus, who shared second place at 419.
McKeen, more than anyone, took advantage as she put up an 18-hole score of 91, topping every individual except Marcellus’ Mary Colella, who prevailed with an 85 that included a back-nine 39, by far the best nine any individual could produce.
Rivers, shooting a 93, finished alone in third place to boost the Spartans and topped J-D’s top golfer, Lena Jones, by six shots as Jones tied Marcellus’ Hannah Abbott for sixth place.
Meanwhile, CBA put away team honors by having Liz Kip tie for eighth with a 102, while seventh-grader Sophia Matrone matched her junior teammate, Mackenzie Griffith, as they both shot 112. Paige Nicholson, with a 139, was further back.
J-D saw Zoe Pipines get a 104 and Liz Redmond shoot a 108, with MaryKate Scheftic adding a 114 and Alex Catanzarite managing a 118. On ESM’s side, Kaleigh Graves, with a 112, beat out Hannah Owens (115) and Sarah Moran (116), while Hannah Johnson finished with a 145.
Just before the league tournament, CBA pulled out a 210-213 decision over Oswego. Kip shot 46 at Oswego Country Club, just behind the Buccaneers’ Olivia Dowdle (45), but while Lydia Tyron shot a 49 for Oswego, the Brothers caught up with a 51 from McKeen, a 55 from Katie Cool and a 58 from Nicholson, each of them ahead of the Bucs’ Danielle Delconte (59) and Kaitlyn Romeo (60).
ESM won that same day, handling Central Square 206-236 at Greenview, where Rivers and Graves both shot 47 to lead the Spartans, bettering the Redhawks’ Hannah Burnett (52) by five shots. Moran and Owens both shot 56 and Shannon Marcy added a 57 to top Central Square’s second-best player, Maddie Haley, who only managed a 60.
With a bigger goal in mind, Fayetteville-Manlius wrapped up its undefeated run through the CNY Counties League last Monday afternoon at Green Lakes, where again the Hornets dealt well with cool, windy conditions and pieced together a 198-236 victory over the West Genesee Wildcats.
Among individuals, Audrey Putelo won a tight race for medalist honors, shooting 47 for nine holes to beat out WG’s Mikki Riley, who had a 49. But the Hornets’ depth took over again as Maggie Bonomo and Justine Burress each shot 50, with Elizabeth Truman and Bailey Wallace adding matching rounds of 51 ahead of the Wildcats’ second-best effort, a 60 from Juilana Burns.
And this followed on the heels of F-M repeating as champions of J-D’s second annual Eastside Varsity Girls Golf Tournament on May 11 at Butternut Creek, Kingsley shot a 33 to win individual honors in that event.
