They had five divisions – three in singles, two in doubles – for last week’s Section III Class A boys tennis tournament at SUNY-Cortland, and Fayetteville-Manlius won every single one of them.
It started with with Taran Judge in first singles. Judge routed Central Square’s Sean Kubis 6-1, 6-1 and blanked Cicero-North Syracuse’s Rich Dennis 6-0, 6-0 to set up a final with Auburn’s Scott Minnoe,
It proved a classic, Minnoe winning the first set 7-5 and getting within a tie-breaker of a sweep. But Judge won that tie-breaker, took the set 7-6 and then defeated Minnoe 6-3 in the third set for the title.
In second singles, Michael Miller rolled past Eric Shear (Fulton) and Kevin Sanchez (Watertown) 6-0, 7-6 in the semifinals, leading to a title match against Cicero-North Syracuse’s Connor Millias. Here, three sets weren’t required as Miller got through a second-set tie-breaker to close it out 6-2, 7-6.
Thomas Miro ruled in third singles, dropping just two games in his first two matches against Zach Carrier (Rome Free Academy) and Dan Watkins (Baldwinsville) before the final against Watertown’s Aiden King, where Miro went through two tough sets, but won both of them, topping King 6-4, 7-6 for the crown.
It was the same in doubles, where James DeSorbo and Vince Sorrentino handled Trevor Bohannon and Dan Clark (Auburn) 6-2, 6-1 before a tough semifinal where they beat B’ville’s Chris Dotto and Nick Walker 6-2, 6-2.
The final pitted DeSorbo and Sorrentino against West Genesee’s Connor McGuigan and James Plunkett, and once again DeSorbo and Sorrentino pulled through, winning both the first and second sets by 6-4 margins to take the crown.
Moving to second doubles, Rohan Dhawan and Vince Grasso handled Jake Kane and Derek Mayer (Central Square) 6-1, 6-1 and then got past Auburn’s Jack Farrington and Luke Parker 6-1, 6-2, reaching the final against B’ville’s Scott Ferrari and Mason Soeder.
Just as with Judge, Dhawan and Grasso lost the first set, only this was a 6-3 margin. That didn’t matter, though, because once the Hornets’ pair got on a roll, they blitzed Ferrari and Soeder, winning those last two sets by margins of 6-2 and 6-3 to help F-M go five-for-five.
