For an inning, the Skaneateles softball team gained the upper hand against its rivals from Marcellus.
Games are seven innings long, though, and by the middle stages of last Monday’s showdown, the Mustangs were in command, eventually defeating the Lakers 14-3.
During the bottom of the first, Skaneateles got to Marcellus pitcher Laura Finn. Margaret Canty, Maeve Canty and Marysa Corona all got run-scoring hits, driving in Kyra Cottrill, Ryley Pascal and Elizabeth Williams.
Cottrill pitched, and kept her team in front until the top of the fourth, when the Mustangs, still trailing 3-2, erupted for nine runs. Jayme Lema, Sydney Stehle and Emily Welch led the visitors with three RBIs apiece.
Mustangs Laura Finn blanked Skaneateles from the second inning onward, finishing with 14 strikeouts. Only Margaret Canty got two hits off Finn as Morgan Deacy earned a hit, as did Williams, Corono and Maeve Canty.
Hosting Jordan-Elbridge 24 hours later, the Lakers turned things around and earned its second win of the season, defeating the Eagles 9-6 in a game featuring several momentum shifts.
Skaneateles had two runs in each of the first three innings, steadily building a 6-1 lead. That didn’t hold up, though, as J-E fought back to tie it, 6-6, in the top of the sixth, only to have the Lakers answer with three runs in the bottom of the sixth as Sarah Blowers was able to record the final three outs.
Of the 12 hits Skaneateles put up, half of them came from Ryley Pascal and Margaret Canty, who each got three hits and two RBIs. Deacy, Williams, Shannon Foehl and Leah King drove in one run apiece as Foehl and Pascal each scored twice.
Aiming for back-to-back wins Wednesday against another group of Eagles from McGraw, Skaneateles unloaded with its highest run total of the season and won 22-2, improving to 3-11 on the season by banging out 21 hits.
Incredibly, Pascal got a hit in all six of her trips to the plate, scoring five runs and finishing with three RBIs. Tara Chalupnicki added three hits and three RBIs, while Canty also drove in three runs. Foehl, Corona, Morgan Deacy and Kathryn Lindgren got two RBIs apiece. King and Kayla Ramsden drove in single runs as Cottrill scored four runs.
