Both the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool girls golf teams headed toward the latter part of their respective regular-season slates, knowing that the May 24 Section III tournament at Kanon Valley was close at hand.
At Northern Pines last Monday afternoon, C-NS met the same Auburn team it beat at Owasco Country Club on April 25. This time, though, the Maroons were at full strength, and turned that result around, defeating the Northstars 177-208.
Auburn’s two-time state individual champion, Lindsay May, had missed that first meeting, but she was quite present at Northern Pines, posting a 36 for nine holes to top all individuals by eight shots over teammate Maggie Lesch.
Meanwhile, C-NS saw Morgan Siechen post a 45 and Nessa McKie add a 46, with no other Northstars player close to those marks as Mackenzie Cole finished with a 58 and Molly Shaughnessy added a 59. Auburn’s Marki Flurschutz (48) and Lauryn Husby (49) were in front of them.
On Wednesday afternoon, C-NS would go to Timber Banks to face Baldwinsville, and pull away for a 213-236 victory. McKie put together a 44, the best individual round and a full 15 shots ahead of the Bees’ top golfer, Emma Brushingham.
Liverpool started its week in a far different manner than C-NS, prevailing 194-211 over West Genesee. Mia Avotins, shooting a 42 at Westvale, beat her sister, Natalya, by two shots for individual honors. Each of them topped the 48 shot by the Wildcats’ Mikki Riley as Mia Latifagic produced a 52 to help the Warriors pull away.
Then it was the Warriors’ turn to deal with Auburn Thursday at Owasco, and Liverpool put up a good team score, yet still lost to the Maroons 177-195 to fall to 4-4 on the season.
Mia Avotins shot a 42, second among individuals behind May, who finished with a 38. Natalya Avotins had a 43 that Lesch matched for Auburn, and the Maroons got away with twin scores of 48 by Flurschutz and Husby ahead of Leah Egan, who had a 52, and Latifagic, who had a 48.
