The Cazenovia wrestling trio of Jacob Wells, Alex Curr and Kevin Frega still find themselves in the hunt for Section III championships that will get decided this Saturday at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena.
Each of them made their way to the championship round during last Saturday’s sectional Class C meet at Adirondack High School in Boonville, where the Lakers finished eighth in the 12-team field with 94.5 points. Host Adirondack, who won the sectional Dual Meet on Jan. 27, edged General Brown, 271 points to 252.5, for the team title.
Wrestling at 106 pounds, Wells pinned Seth Salmonsen (Hannibal) in 1:12 in the quarterfinals and then topped Lowville’s Cory Woodward 4-2 in the semifinals. Then Wells ran into Adirondack star Kevin Spann in the finals and lost in a 53-second fall.
Curr was a finalist at 182 pounds. He pinned Earl Wallis (APW-Pulaski) in 35 seconds and then took 70 seconds to pin Josh Seaman (Canastota) to reach the semifinals, where Curr earned an 8-0 shutout over Skaneateles’ Pat Greenfield. Then, in the final, Curr went all six minutes with Adirondack’s Joe Hennessey, but lost a 7-1 decision.
Frega entered as the no. 2 seed at 195 pounds. He had a 32-second pin over Nate Petrie (Onondaga) and pinned Kevin Albert (Adirondack) in 75 seconds before an impressive semifinal where Frega got an 18-1 technical fall over General Brown’s Jacob Joanette. But Frega could not get past Sherburne-Earville’s Jack Buell in the final, taking a second-period fall.
Will Khalil finished third at 120 pounds, claiming three straight wins following a quarterfinal loss, capped by a 5-3 decision over Canastota’s Nick Rouse in the consolation bracket final.
Paul McLaughlin beat Lowville’s Brent Milliard 7-2 to finish fifth at 138 pounds. Will Shephard was sixth at 120 as Matt McLaughlin finished sixth at 126 pounds.
