Onondaga — With a strong all-around effort, the Westhill-Bishop Ludden boys indoor track and field team earned the Section III Class B championship Friday night at SRC Arena, and other local teams had plenty of reason to feel proud, too.
The boys Warriors had 102 points to earn a comfortable victory over runner-up Christian Brothers Academy (63 points), while Marcellus was fifth with 39.5 points, with Jordan-Elbridge (25 points) and Solvay (17.5 points) further back.
Bryan King beat the field in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.30 seconds, helped by Owen Hoyne, who was fourth in 8.84 seconds. In the pole vault, King cleared 11 feet, as did Evan Watt, the pair joining Ben Eassa (10’6″) in the second, third and fourth spots worth a total of 18 points to the Warriors.
Alex Kiley won the triple jump, going 40 feet 1 inch to hold off Clinton’s Enzo Cicchinelli (39’9″ for the top spot. Kiley also earned a second-place long jump of 20 feet 4 3/4 inches, with Skaneateles’ Tommy Hagen (21′ 1/4″) on top. Kiley also beat out Matt McAnaney, 7.12 seconds to 7.21, for fourth place in the 55-meter dash.
In the 4×200 relay, Nick French, Cody Badman, Chris Coates and Matt McAnaney won in 1:39.19, holding off Solvay’s quartet of Jordan Devereaux, Tony Matysuk, Colton Francemone and Garrett Lee, who was second in 1:39.59, less than half a second behind.
Garnet Remillard got second place in the 3,200-meter run in 9:53.71, and later took second in the mile in 4:43.96 right behind Canastota’s Adam VanValkenburgh (4:42.82) as Jake Suddaby was fifth in 4:49.74.
For Marcellus, its lone win was earned by Sean Raymond in the high jump, where Raymond cleared 5’10” to finish two inches ahead of Cicchinelli and Canastota’s Steve Scaramuzzino.
Patrick McGuane, in 1:27.44, finished second to Syracuse ITC’s Solomon Lawrence (1:25.60) in the 600-meter run. Later, in the 4×800 relay, McGuane, Joe Riccardi, Ethan Mosure and Matt Strempel were second in 8:58.48, with Westhill-Ludden third in 9:19.35 and J-E fourth in 9:27.45.
continued — Moving to the 300-meter dash, the Mustangs’ Mike Provvidenti finished in exactly 38 seconds and was runner-up to CBA’s Tom SanGiacomo (37.32 seconds). Sam Stearns tied for sixth in the pole vault.
Strempel gained fourth place in the 1,000-meter run in 2:49.48, with J-E’s Hunter Brunelle (2:53.50) finishing sixth. Riccardi finished sixth in the 3,200, while the Eagles’ Ethan Kinney was third in the 300 in 38.50 seconds and fourth (1:32.02) in the 600.
J-E did get a win, too, from Brad Marshall in the shot put. Marshall’s throw of 45’6″ beat the field by more than three feet, though Westhill-Ludden’s Will Swartwood was third, going 39’8 3/4″.
Solvay, in the 4×400 relay, saw Devereaux, Lee, Francemone and Matysuk finish second in 3:42.46, just behind Altmar-Parish-Williamstown (3:41.94) as Westhill-Ludden was third in 3:43.51. Josh Chrysler gained sixth place (9.03 seconds) in the 55 hurdles for the Bearcats.
Meanwhile, in the girls sectional Class B meet, Westhill-Ludden made it to fourth place with 69 points as Cazenovia edged CBA by half a point, 96.5-96, on top. Solvay was sixth with 27 points, ahead of J-E (20 points) and Marcellus (15 points).
Going 1-2 in the pole vault, the Warriors again had Katherine Doherty on top, clearing 10 feet as Noelle Coolican cleared 9 feet for second place. Katie De Veyra was fourth, topping 8’6″.
Doherty also took third place in the 55 hurdles in 9.65 seconds, with De Veyra fourth in 9.79 seconds and Marcellus putting Haley Randall (9.92 seconds) in sixth place. Zoe Fortin was fourth (14’10 1/4″) in the long jump and also fourth (32’3 1/4″) in the triple jump, where Annibel Coolican (31’6″) got sixth place.
In the 3,000-meter run, Westhill-Ludden had Genny Corcoran finish second in 10:51.12 and Alaina Kenny take fourth place in 11:12.20. Haylei Coolican was fifth in the 1,000 in 3:12.72. The Warriors were fifth in the 4×400 in 4:29.22 as Solvay was sixth in 4:38 flat.
continued — J-E’s Abby Gugel was victorious in the 1,500-meter run, roaring to a time of 4:48.99 as no one else broke the four-minute mark, the Warriors seeing Liz Kessler finish fourth (5:06.78) and Genny Corcoran fifth (5:09.28). The Eagles’ Emma Burns was sixth (5:12.31) and her teammate, Madi Hatt, was sixth in the 600 in 1:45.29.
Hatt and Burns, paired with Gugel and Theresa Dristle, rose to second place in the 4×800 in 10:15.42, trailing only Cazenovia (10:11.14) as Westhill-Ludden was fourth in 10:23.76 before it was fifth (1:56.63) in the 4×200.
Solvay’s Katie Harrington finished second in the triple jump, going 33’5 3/4″ behind Skaneateles’ Angela Krause (34’1 3/4″). Harrington also got fifth place in both the long jump (14’7″) and the high jump with a clearance of 4’10”.
The Bearcats also saw Ashley Bosco finish second (30’2″) to Clinton’s Aneesa Lewis (33’4 1/4″) in the shot put, with Samantha Waters third by getting a toss of 29’3 3/4″.
As for Marcellus, Mary-Catherine Coon, clearing 4’10” in the high jump, finished second, with teammate Grace Coon topping 4’10” for fourth place. Meg Blystone took fifth place (27’9″) and Gabby Schaffner seventh in the shot put.
