Post-season action for each of the area’s indoor track and field teams would commence in the last full week of January, when Christian Brothers Academy contended for top honors in the Onondaga High School League Division 2 meet at SRC Arena.
On the girls side, the Brothers, even without Anna Schug to help in the sprints, finished fourth, with 49 points, while on the boys side CBA had 36 points and settled for sixth place. Cazenovia’s girls, with 119 points, and Westhill-Bishop Ludden’s boys, with 114.5 points, topped their respective divisions.
Kiana Ferguson was victorious for the CBA girls in the 55-meter dash, going 7.63 seconds to edge out Cazenovia’s Kirsten Underwood (7.72 seconds) as Anna Langlois was seventh in 7.88 seconds.
Not stopping there, Ferguson went to the long jump and went 16 feet 1 ¼ inches to prevail again over Cazenovia’s Maddy Gavitt (15’7 ½”). Ferguson also was fifth in the 300-meter dash in 45.39 seconds, with Ryleigh Peterson (46.12 seconds) seventh.
Then Olivia Morganti won the 600-meter run in 1:43.93, clear of Skaneateles’ Julia Willcox (1:45.17) by more than a second, and in the 55-meter hurdles. Skylar Decker went 9.27 seconds to top Westhill-Ludden’s Katherine Doherty (9.42 seconds) and the field as Decker also finished sixth in the long jump (14’4 ¾”) behind Ferguson. Lea Kyle needed 5:07.85 to grab third place in the 1,500-meter run.
CBA’s boys team was led by Tom SanGiacomo, who won the 300 sprint by going 37.95 seconds, ahead of Marcellus’ Mike Provvidenti (38.32 seconds) and the field by a comfortable margin. Pat Carey nearly won the 55 hurdles, going 8.62 seconds to get second place behind Westhill-Ludden’s Bryan King (8.42 seconds).
Nihkil Reddy gained third place in the 1,000-meter run in 2:46.64 as Syracuse ITC’s Solomon Lawrence won here in 2:42.49 and also won the 600-meter run and mile by night’s end. Dominic Morganti finished third in the mile (4:46.44) behind Lawrence and Brendan Keeney, in 1:32.84, took fourth place in the 600, again with Lawrence on top. Jake Vanpatten was fifth in the 55 sprint in 7.32 seconds, with Brett Vanpatten (7.38 seconds) eighth.
Jamesville-DeWitt would compete in Friday’s Utica Challenge Invitational at Utica College’s newly-built Hutton Dome, and finish seventh on the girls side with 46 points, not far from the top spot, where Rome Free Academy (57 points) edged Cicero-North Syracuse (56 points) for those top honors. J-D’s boys tied for 15th with 19 points.
Alexandria Payne was victorious for J-D in the 55 hurdles, where in 8.87 seconds she pulled away as no one else broke the nine-second mark, C-NS’s Cassie Baldwin taking second place in 9.14 seconds. Then, in the high jump, Payne cleared 5 feet 3 inches, the same as Columbia’s Estelle Yednyak, but finished second because Yednyak had fewer misses.
With points handed out to the top eight finishers, J-D’s girls were second in the 4×400 relay as Casey Keane, Alexia Carr, Alexandria Payne and Elena Haarer posted a time of 4:11.22, beaten only by Colonie’s 4:07.05. Carr, Kaillee Philleo, Madelyn Spina and Adobea Abdo were fifth in the 4×200 in 1:57.22.
Hannah Butler vied for top honors in the 1,500, her time of 4:52.23 beaten only by Colonie’s Amanda Chambers, who won in 4:50.01. Gabrielle Tanksley was fifth in the pole vault, clearing 8’6”, with Sara Signorelli eighth as she topped 8 feet. Keane was seventh in the 800-meter run in 2:30.96, while Carr took ninth in the 55 sprint, with Megan Brown 12th in the 1,000.
On the boys side, Nolan Roosa was fourth in the high jump, clearing 5’10, with Jan Ramirez eighth (5’6”) as Roosa also took sixth (8.66 seconds) and Alex Carbacio eighth (8.82 seconds) in the 55 hurdles, Alex Le cleared 11 feet in the pole vault, getting fourth place as Chris Blust tied for sixth, topping 10 feet.
Evan Baxter got an eighth-place shot put toss of 39’6 ¾”. Patrick Dye was 10th in the mile in 4:42.06 and David Fikham was 15th in the 300, with Joey Armenta 17th in the long jump. J-D got an eighth-place time of 1:43.28 in the 4×200 relay.
