Onondaga — It was supposed to be the busiest stretch of the local high school indoor track and field season, but that got curtailed a bit when last Monday’s John Arcaro Invitational was snowed out.
That will get made up this Sunday, but in the meantime, there was the Fred Kirschenheiter Memorial Invitational to get through last Saturday at SRC Arena, and in the morning session West Genesee saw its girls team finish second to Fayetteville-Manlius, with Westhill-Bishop Ludden third in the afternoon session.
Picking up 83 points to F-M’s 104, the girls Wildcats saw Carly Benson tear through 1,500 meters in four minutes, 48.10 seconds to win that event. Then, in the 600-meter run, Benson won again, pulling away in 1:38.49 as CBA’s Anna Schug (1:43.39) was nearly five seconds back in the runner-up spot.
Maria Matkoski, Kendall Dombroske, Megan Delia and Madalyn Benson went 4:16.88 in the 4×400 relay to beat Skaneateles (4:21.47) by nearly five seconds. Then Delia earned her own title in the 300-meter dash, going 43.20 seconds to beat Baldwinsville’s Tina Bartelli (44.48) by a comfortable margin.
Delia on to get second place (16 feet ½ inch) to B’ville’s Hailey Couchman (16’8”) in the long jump, while J’Nazia Anderson threw the shot put 29’4”, second to another B’ville athlete, Anna Miller, who won with 30’ ½”. Michela Kashay cleared 4’6” in the high jump for sixth place.
On her own, Matkoski was third in the 1,000-meter run in 3:02.39, while Emily Young was third in the 3,000-meter run in 10:48.05 and Mia Mitchell was sixth. Kelsey Fox took sixth in the 55-meter dash and paired with Matkoski, Thi Tran and Shelby Kiteleves to get fourth place in the 4×200 relay in 1:55.82.
Westhill-Ludden got 49 points to finish fifth in the girls morning session, getting many of them in a 1-2 pole vault sweep where Katherine Doherty won, going 10 feet as Noelle Coolican cleared 9’6” for the second spot.
continued — Also, the Warriors had Doherty (9.67 seconds) and Jayanna Monds (9.68 seconds) get second and third place, respectively, in the 55-meter hurdles behind CBA’s Skylar Decker (9.44 seconds), with WG’s Madalyn Benson fifth in 9.83 seconds.
Alaina Kenny, Annibel Coolican, Genny Corcoran and Olivia Daigneau went 10:20.19 in the 4×800, a distant second behind F-M, but beating WG’s quartet of Dombroske, Young, Madeline Lowry and Sara Ferranti, who was third in 10;31.45.
Carmelia Carr, Noelle Coolican, Sarah Lachance and Kendra MacCaull were third in the 4×400 in 4:37.29. Liz Kessler got fifth place in the 1,000 in 3:21.28, while Carr was sixth in the 1,500 behind Carly Benson.
Going to the boys morning session, Westhill-Ludden had 44 points, behind only F-M (81 points) and Baldwinsville (75 points), while West Genesee, with 31 points, landed in fifth place.
That included, for the Warriors, a win in the 4×400, where Bryan King, Adam French, Cody Badman and Matt McAnaney went 3:45.60 to hold off CBA (3:46.36) by less than a second. Badman, French and McAnaney joined Alex Kiley to get third place in the 4×200 in 1:41.44, where West Genesee (1:42.49) finished fifth.
Kiley earned a second-place long jump of 19’11 ½”, just behind Auburn’s Devante House (19’11 ¾”) by a quarter of an inch. Ben Eassa cleared 8’6” in the pole vault for third place, while the Wildcats’ Paul Stannard cleared 8 feet for fifth place.
WG’s David Leff was second in the mile in 4:24.21, just behind F-M’s Bryan Geehrer (4:23.26), with Russ Graziano second in the 600 in 1:29.05 behind Syracuse ITC’s Solomon Lawrence (1:24.81) as Westhill-Ludden’s Garnet Remillard was third in 1:30.52. The Warriors’ Chris Coates took fifth in the 300 sprint in 39.40 seconds.
Elsewhere for the Wildcats, Sean O’Brien was sixth (10:45.06) in the 3,200-meter run. Leff, joined by Graziano, Ryan Desko and Hunter Buza, was third in the 4×800 in 8:53.71, with Westhill-Ludden fourth in 9:32.26. Stannard, Paul Stanard, Mitch Colvin and Chris Petosa put WG in fourth place in the 4×400 in 3:56.41.
continued — Of the local teams competing in the afternoon session, Jordan-Elbridge did best, with 33 points in the girls meet to finish sixth as Solvay, with 10 points, tied for eighth. Liverpool edged Cicero-North Syracuse for both team titles.
Abby Gugel gave the girls Eagles a first-place finish in the 3,000 in 10:35.56, more than 20 seconds ahead of Liverpool’s Vanessa Eberhard (10:57.34).
Julie Hines took third place in the 300 in 44.51 seconds and was fourth in the 55 sprint in 7.85 seconds, while also clearing 4’8” in the high jump for another fourth-place finish as Marcellus saw Mary-Catherine Coon finish sixth. Mary Elizabeth Dristle was sixth in the 1,500 in 4:55.66, just ahead of teammate Madison Daly in seventh. Hunter Brunelle was sixth in the boys mile in 4:55.66.
Solvay’s Samantha Waters threw the shot put 31’9 ¾”, getting third place as Ashley Bosco (31’8 ¼”) was right behind in fourth place. ordyn Willsey was sixth in the girls 1,000 in 3:25.44. Marcellus was sixth in the girls 4×400 in 4:51.11.
In boys action, Solvay nearly won the 4×400, seeing Jordan Devereaux, Garrett Lee, Colton Francemone and Tony Matysuk go 3:43.88 to finish second, with C-NS prevailing in 3:33.64. Marcellus had Patrick McGuane take second in the 600 in 1:28.30, just behind Liverpool’s Terrell Coleman (1:27.49), while J-E’s Ethan Kinney was fifth in the 300. The Mustangs’ Sean Raymond cleared 5’8” in the high jump, taking fifth place.
