Mattydale — Special things were taking place at Strike-N-Spare Lanes last Tuesday when the East Syracuse Minoa bowling team faced Oswego, including a dash of perfection by Dan Marriott on the boys side and something close to it from Haley Youkek on the girls side.
When the boys Spartans defeated the Buccaneers 2-1, Marriott provided the ultimate highlight during a game where all 12 shots found the pocket, leading to a 300. Marriott eventually finished with a 742 series as he became the second Section III bowler to get a 300 this season, Fulton’s Kyle Denson having pulled it off a week earlier.
Mike Sicilia, with a 638 series and 242 high game, and Ryan MacCombie, with a 631 series and high game of 225, offered support to Marriott. Brandon Grant led Oswego with a 622 series as Kyle Freberg (599 series) was close behind.
Meanwhile, the ESM girls team shut out Oswego 3-0, and Youker led the way, recording 10 strikes during a 280 game that was the highest total by any Section III girls player this season. Youkek finished with a 647 series as her teammate, Jourdyn Buck, earned a 614 series that included a 222 high game.
This led to Wednesday’s showdown between ESM and Fulton for first place in the Onondaga High School League, but the Red Raiders, with its own remarkable effort from Kyle Denson, kept the Spartans off the board, prevailing by a 3-0 margin.
Denson, who rolled a 300 game against Bishop Grimes a week earlier, nearly was perfect again, rolling a 289 game during a blistering set that finished with Denson earning a Section III season-best 806 series. Brad Martin added a 713 series and 277 high game, negating solid series by MacCombie, who had a 649 series and 254 high game, and Marriott, who cooled down to a 634 series and high game of 232.
continued — Contrasting that was ESM’s girls beating Fulton by that same 3-0 margin, pushed there by Youker, whose 686 series included a season-best 265 game, and Buck, who earned a 215 game. The Red Raiders lost despite Meg Guernsey’s 645 series and 244 high game.
To start its week, Fayetteville-Manlius met Auburn last Monday at Green Lakes Bowl. The boys Hornets lost, 3-0, to the Maroons, with James Badger earning a 540 series and Isaac Blanford adding a 523 series. John Luke-Bounfiglio earned a 207 game during his 499 set. Auburn’s Andrew Kopec led his side, putting together a three-game total of 694 that included a 246 high game. Kopec’s teammate, David Watkins, shot a 232 game on his way to a 581 series.
Then both F-M sides met Liverpool on Thursday at Flamingo Bowl, with the boys Hornets beating the Warriors 3-0 as Badger shot a 674 series, while Luke-Bounfiglio added a 558 set. The girls Hornets took a 3-0 defeat as Marta Polosky shot a 401 series, trailing the Warriors’ tandem of Dailyn McCarthy (495 series, 190 high game) and Riley Warren (435 series).
Bishop Grimes faced Cortland on Wednesday afternoon. In the boys Cobras’ 3-0 defeat, Alex Moran stood out with a 584 series, while Michael Delvecchio had a 478 series. The Purple Tigers featured Jake Woods earning a 607 series and Alex Babcock (595 series, 231 high game) close behind.
The Grimes girls lost, 3-0, though Samantha Houck shot a 432 series, with a 182 high game, to beat out Cat Samara, whose 425 series included a 163 game. Angelica Scarfino added a 412 set as Taylor Cullip paced Cortland with a three-game total of 569.
When each of the Grimes teams faced Homer on Thursday, it could not get on the board. In the boys 3-0 loss, Phil Zaccheo shot a 611 series, with a 213 high game, while Moran had a 555 series, two pins ahead of Delvecchio’s 553 set.
continued — But the Trojans had five bowlers shoot 600 or better series, led by Brandon Grant, whose 672 set beat out Joe Esposito (659 series), Brandon Aylesworth (658 series) and Ryan Aylesworth (653 series) for individual honors.
Christian Brothers Academy met the same fate against Homer, not getting a point in a 3-0 boys defeat even though Matt DePerro, named this week as an All-American for soccer by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (he is going to Providence College), rolled a steady 633 series, with no game higher than 222.
DePerro’s soccer teammate, Jake Dinger, added a 223 high game and 610 series, while Nate Burns had a 593 series and 216 high game. Esposito had the best series of the season in the league with a 778 that included a 277 high game.
CBA split its matches with Chittenango on Thursday, winning the boys contest 3-0 as DePerro shot a 621 series that included a high game of 245. Burns shot a 588 set with a 226 high game as William Ierlan improved to a 579 series, featuring a high game of 209.
In the girls match, where CBA lost, 3-0, Maddie Cook shot a 359 series, with Olivia Penoyer’s 334 series beating Lexi Luthringer by a single pin. The Trojans’ Katie Vartanian led her side, earning a 479 series. The Brothers also lost 3-0 to Chittenango Thursday as Cook led her side with a 164 game and 358 series.
