Ahead of its showdown with undefeated Liverpool early this week, the West Genesee boys swim team handled another Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division rival.
The Wildcats began its 2018 slate at home last Wednesday night, taking on Cicero-North Syracuse and steadily pulling away to defeat the Northstars 104-79.
As a tone-setter, WG’s 200-yard medley relay team of Matt Shoults, Zac Zoanetti, Alex Shuron and Keegan Schuron went to first place in one minute, 50.65 seconds to C-NS’s 1:52.90.
Then Shoults won on his own in the 50 freestyle in 23.26 seconds before moving on to the 500 freestyle, where in 5:49.15 he finished second to teammate Ryan McMahon, who won in 5:29.13.
Justin Byrne, with 217.70 points in diving, was part of a 1-2-3 finish with David Puma (185.75 points) and Adriel Schoeck (177.55 points). Shuron followed by winning the 100 butterfly in 1:01.97.
Zoanetti was victorious in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.12 as McMahon, Shuron, Shoults and Matt Shields swam the 400 freestyle relay in 3:46.84. McMahon, Zoanetti, Shields and Connor Macko covered the 200 freestyle relay in 1:43.71.
Elsewhere, McMahon was second in the 200 freestyle in 2:01.79, while Schauron was a close second (55.11 seconds) to C-NS’s Eli Ward (55.04) in the 100 freestyle. Shuron was second in the 200 individual medley in 2:21.87 and Mike Whitney was second (1:06.75) in the 100 backstroke.
Back on Dec. 29, many of WG’s divers took part in the Mexico Diving Invitational, where Byrne recorded a top-five finish. With 346.70 points, Byrne edged out Puma (339.95 points) for that fifth spot. Puma settled for sixth place as Schoeck was ninth with 305.50 points.
Parker McIlroy was 13th with 247.85 points as Kyle Collins and Aiden Burlingame were 17th and 18th, respectively. Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA went 1-2 as Ryan Evans (433.65 points) held off Lucas Dekaney (422.80 points) for that top spot.
