Though it was a tough, hard-fought game against a top-notch Class A foe, the Marcellus girls lacrosse team’s 14-10 defeat to Pittsford on May 12 cost it the top spot in the state Class D rankings it had held the previous two weeks.
Still, the Mustangs were quite content at the no. 2 spot behind top-ranked Palmyra-Macedon (Section V), and more importantly, it responded its first defeat since early April with a vengeance, taking apart Carthage last Monday night in a 25-6 romp.
The first half featured 16 Marcellus goals, and the only thing that kept it from more was a running clock during the second half. Still, Maddie Conklin accumulated 11 points through her six goals and five assists as Grace Coon also scored six times.
Katherine Locastro had three goals and four assists, while Colette Rigas matched Locastro’s three-goal output. Abby Vetsch had two goals and four assists, joined in the two-goal column by Anna Vetsch and Sarah Hutchings. Taylor Reich added a goal and Lily Powell picked up an assist.
Three days later, Marcellus found out it had the no. 1 seed for the Section III Class D playoffs.
Westhill, still at no. 6 in those same state Class D rankings, shut out Chittenango 21-0 last Monday night, having Haileigh Farrell and Erin McMullen set the pace as they each scored four times and contributed a pair of assists.
Abby Stack matched that point total with three goals and three assists, while Sam VanBuren had three goals and one assist and Kendra MacCaull had two goals and two assists. Maura McAnaney also found the net twice as Sophia Sgroi, Ryan Murphy and Katherine McPeak got one goal apiece.
Westhill drew the no. 3 seed for the sectional Class D tournament and a quarterfinal Tuesday against no. 6 seed LaFayette. Jordan-Elbridge got the no. 4 seed and, if it beat no. 5 seed South Jefferson, could meet Marcellus, the top seed, in the semifinals Thursday at Christian Brothers Academy’s Alibrandi Stadium.
Bishop Ludden-Bishop Grimes, who did not reach the post-season, went to New Hartford last Monday and routed the Spartans 18-7, doing most of its damage during a first half where it sped out to a 12-4 lead. Two nights later, it beat Chittenango 12-4 as Molly McInerney and Emma Driscoll both got five goals, with Mary Fallon and Chenzie Diglio also finding the net.
