A lot has changed for the Christian Brothers Academy girls lacrosse team since its state Class B title run in 2013, which included a rare win at West Genesee.
When the Brothers again visited Wildcat Stadium last Friday night, it was a far different result as WG, pulling away late, prevailed by a score of 11-2.
Grace Osterdale got it started with a goal at the five-minute mark, and WG led 3-0, with only the strong work of CBA’s defense keeping it from an early runaway.
Rachel Vercillo cut the deficit to 3-1 late in the half before a key sequence late in the half. Jackie Pardee scored, and amid a flurry of yellow cards, Hannah Elmer put one home 3.6 seconds before the horn, giving WG a 5-1 cushion at the break.
Quiet for a large portion of the second half, WG would score five times in the last 10 minutes, the only interruption a goal by Maddie Cook. Pardee, Donahue, Elmer, Mackenzie Baker and Madisyn Kittell would all find the net, too, as Katherine Widrick was superb in the net, turning back 10 of CBA’s 12 shots for the game.
Just before going to Camillus, CBA had one tune-up, going to Cortland last Tuesday and controlling matters from start to finish in a 17-5 romp over the Purple Tigers.
Up 9-3 by halftime, the Brothers kept on pushing as 10 different players scored, with Cook at the forefront, finishing with five goals and one assist.
Emily Ehle, Katie Anderson and Hannah Werner each scored twice, with Ehle adding a pair of assists. Sam McKenna had a goal and two assists, while Tessa Queri, Meredith Stott, Rachel Ziemba, Lilly Hunt and Claire Jeschke each had one goal. Stott and Queri also had assists.
East Syracuse-Minoa, no. 11 in the first state Class B poll of the spring, smashed Chittenango 20-2 last Tuesday afternoon, rolling to an 11-2 halftime lead and continuing to produce in the latter stages long after the game was settled.
Katy Steigerwald and Kate McGarrity both posted season-best totals of five goals, with Steigerwald adding three assists. Just behind them, Haley DeVona had four goals and three assists, while Morgan Young scored twice. Cindy Brownson, Brigid McGinley, Amlia Mujezinovic and Jenna Kenney notched single goals.
In need of a signature win, Fayetteville-Manlius got one against Liverpool last Tuesday night at LHS Stadium, rallying and, in three overtimes, edging past the Warriors 10-9.
Little went right for the Hornets in the first half, when it fell behind 6-2. But led by Jane Cote and Meg Kincaid, F-M reversed those numbers in the second half and tied it, 8-8, forcing overtime, where both teams got a goal before the visitors pushed across the game-winner.
Cote and Kincaid each finished with three-goal hat tricks. Just behind them, Carly Primo had two goals and one assist, with Olivia Tejan also finding the net twice. Each of Aubrey Deveau’s six saves proved important as Liverpool’s Kasi Cabrey led both sides with four goals.
Then F-M toppled ESM in an impressive 13-6 non-league encounter on Thursday afternoon, sprinting out to a 10-4 halftime lead, something that the Spartans could not overcome.
Kincaid, scoring four goals, led a well-balanced attack where Mary Trop, Julie Neuberger and Grace Bang each scored twice and Trop added a pair of assists. Cote, Tejan and Allison Macrae had the other goals. For ESM, DeVona was the lone player to score twice, with Young, McGarrity, McGinley and Brownson getting one goal apiece and Steigerwald adding two assists.
Jamesville-DeWitt, needing a win, got it Wednesday by holding off Mexico 10-8. The Red Rams doubled the Tigers’ output in a 6-3 first half, and overcame three goals by Tyler Beck to stay out in front the rest of the way.
Carly Stone, with five goals, accounted for half of J-D’s production. Jessica Wipper added three assists as Caroline Kopp scored twice. Julia Slisz, Carly Neugebauer and Alyssa Phillips had the other goals, with Bess Murad contributing an assist.
As a follow-up, the Red Rams bashed New Hartford 20-4 on Friday afternoon, notching 15 first-half goals, its biggest outburst of the season, with Stone getting five goals and Neugebauer managing four goals and one assist.
Just behind them, Wipper, Grace Huslander and Lizzie O’Brien each scored twice, with O’Brien getting three assists and Hulslander two assists. Slisz and Meghan Byrnes both finished with one goal and one assist. Phillips, Amber Hyatt and Kailen Prosak also scored.
ESM had to slow things down in Friday’s game against Mexico, but still pushed past the Tigers 6-2 as it got a second-half shutout after gaining a 4-2 lead. Hailey DeVona, with two goals and two assists, led the way as Janee DeLuca also scored twice. Brownson and Amila Mujezinovic had the other goals.
