The Friends of Lorenzo will celebrate the first days of Autumn with their annual Community Day from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25, at the Rippleton Schoolhouse. This tradition has been a staple in Cazenovia’s fall calendar for the past 12 years, and is full of fun for young and old alike. Admission is free.
Patrons are invited to partake of 19th century games, live country music, pumpkin decorating, traditional crafts, wagon rides, one-room school activities and more. Mark and Jan Woodworth, of Lamplit Farm in Cazenovia, own and drive the team of Belgian draft horses that will be providing free hayrides around the grounds of Lorenzo for children of all ages.
As a new addition to Community Day, a group from the nonprofit arts center Redhouse will perform selections from the Great American Songbook 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
“I look forward to community day each year,” said Jessica Johnson, vice president of the Friends of Lorenzo. “It offers the unique opportunity to feel like you have been transported back in time at the original schoolhouse all while bringing families and people of all ages together for a good old fashioned day of outdoor fun.”
Since the restoration and move of the Rippleton Schoolhouse in 1997, the building has brought renewed life to old traditions. The one-room school has given thousands of Central New York students the chance to attend classes, programs and camps that demonstrate what a typical school day was like in the 1880s. Community Day gives the public a taste of the experience.
Enjoy complimentary fresh apple cider, locally picked apples and fall donuts.
The Rippleton Schoolhouse is located at Lorenzo State Historic Site, south of the village of Cazenovia along Route 13.
