The much-anticipated Townball rematch between teams from the towns of Nelson and Fenner will start at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Nelson town ball field, part of the third annual Nelson Skunk Hollow Day celebrations.
Fenner will defend the title this year after defeating Nelson in 2015 after 21 innings of play. This year’s game will pair old rivals going back decades when baseball was the sport played by local town teams, only this time it will be “Townball” using the Massachusetts rules that were adopted in 1858.
“Fenner won last year and this year the town of Nelson will seek revenge,” said Nelson resident Fay Lyon, one of the Skunk Hollow Day coordinators and an umpire during last year’s game.
This year’s winner will bring a new trophy back to their town to keep for one year until next year’s game.
Anyone who lives in the towns of Nelson or Fenner, male or female, and is older than 13, who would like to join in the townball event can call Fay Lyon at 655-8045 for the Nelson team, or Bill Wester at 655-3340 for the Fenner team.
The townball game will be part of the third annual Skunk Hollow Day in Nelson. The celebration, to which all are invited, will offer games for children, relay races, antique vehicles on display, Nelson-Erieville area business and organization displays, free ice cream from Nelson Farms and a free concert at the Nelson Odeon starting at 4 p.m.
Skunk Hollow Day is hosted and organized by the Nelson United Methodist Church.
