A 16-year-old Cazenovia youth died this past weekend from an apparent suicide, New York State Police have said. No other details are being released, said state police Public Information Officer Jack Keller.
Cazenovia District Superintendent Matt Reilly sent a letter to all district parents on Monday, Oct. 19, informing them of the high school junior’s death on Sunday, Oct. 18. Reilly stated that Cazenovia High School students were read a statement at the beginning of the day Monday informing them of their classmate’s death, explaining what supports were in place for them and letting them know “how much we care about them.”
The letter also stated that elementary and middle school students were not notified of the event during morning announcements, but teachers and staff were told and were instructed to be aware of any students who may need support.
“News of a student’s death will affect different children in different ways. I want to assure you that the school is here to support your child through what can be an emotional time,” Reilly wrote. “School counselors, social workers, school psychologists and others have been, and will continue to be, available to help students during this time of crisis.”
