ONONDAGA COUNTY – Freshman Eva Smith continued to have standout performances for the Baldwinsville girls swim team, capped by setting a new school record in the 100-yard backstroke.
That took place in Thursday’s meet at Liverpool, where Smith broke the one-minute mark and, with a time of 59.66 seconds, set the new school standard. This was in addition to winning the 100 freestyle in 57.08 seconds.
B’ville lost the meet 93-79 to Liverpool after it took a 125-58 defeat to Mexico earlier in the week, an event where Smith also displayed her versatility and skill.
Starting with the 200-yard individual medley, Smith claimed victory in 2:20.18, well clear of the 2:39.95 from the Tigers’ Reatha von Holtz.
A second victory took place in the 100 freestyle, where in 57.75 seconds Smith had the only time under one minute. She also paired with Ashley Konz, Makenna Williams and Madeline Sauro to post 2:09.53 in the 200 medley relay.
Elsehwere, Konz, took second place in the 500 freestyle in 5:55.56 before she posted a quick 1:03.93 in the 100 backstroke.
The Tigers’ top swimmer, Alexa von Holtz, won that 100 backstroke in 1:00.50, while teammate Carolyn Zedack went 5:27.51 in the 500 freestyle.
Other Mexico wins went to Ashley Bennett (200 freestyle), Riley Baxter (50 freestyle), Serena Bardin (diving), Abigail Hinman (100 butterfly) and Evie Fontana (100 breaststroke), with Baxter, Hinman, Zedack and Alexa von Holtz going 1:48.13 in the 200 freestyle relay and 3:56.45 in the 400 freestyle relay.
In the Liverpool meet, Konz again had a pair of second-place finishes, her 2:11.03 in the 200 freestyle trailing the 2:02.37 from Liverpool’s Delaney Gellert, who also prevailed in the 500 freestyle in 5:33.72 ahead of Konz’s 5:47.34.
In the 200 medley relay, Smith, Konz, Williams and Sauro improved from earlier in the week, finishing in 2:08.76 as the Bees looked ahead to meets next week against West Genesee and Cicero-North Syracuse.
