Led by the trio of Carly Benson, Valerie Pirro and J’Nazia Anderson, the West Genesee girls track and field team fought though cold, wet conditions to defeat Baldwinsville 81-60 last Wednesday at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Pirro won three events,, going 17.8 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles and claiming the 400 hurdles in 1:19.1 before a winning triple jump of 30 feet 2 inches, while Anderson swept the throwing events, tossing the shot put 30 feet 9 ½ inches and the discus 63’5 ¾”.
Benson, in a time of 5:15.40, went 1-2 in the 1,500-meter run with Elise Dunshee (5:19.1), and then claimed the 800-meter run in 2:23.5 before pairing with Pirro, Maria Matkoski and Megan Delia to take the 4×400 relay in 4:10 flat.
Delia was first in the 200-meter dash in 27.7 seconds, while Matkoski took the 400-meter dash in 1:01.9. Kelsey Fox edged Megan Hannahan, 13.9 seconds to 14.0, in the 100-meter dash, with Kendall Dombroskie (11:38.4) holding off Lindsay Weaver (11:39.4) in the 3,000-meter run.
WG swept all three relay events. Matkoski and Weaver paired with Sarah Ferranti and Paris Archung to win the 4×800 relay in 10:32.3, with Delia, Fox, Hannahan and Nicole Paone working together in the 4×100, where the Wildcats posted 54.3 seconds.
This proved quite a contrast to the boys meet, where WG lost, 119-22, to Baldwinsville. The Wildcats only won two events, seeing Evan Tuthill throw the discus 101’1” and Josh Mattice toss the shot put 39’8”, but the Bees won every race and relay, getting two victories apiece from Evan Donhauser (110 high hurdles, 100 sprint) and Arden Kellner (800, 3,200).
Marcellus, on the girls side, lost 91-50 to Homer, though Mary-Catherine Coon went 13.4 seconds to take the 100 and then added a victory in the 200 in 28.5 seconds, also winning the high jump by clearing 4’8”.
Elsewhere for the Mustangs, Tori Stopen was first in the 400 sprint in 1:06.2, with Johanna Sylcox throwing the shot put 28’8” and Jenn Scalice clearing 6’6” in the pole vault. Homer’s Keiana Adkins led her side with wins in the long jump, triple jump and 100 hurdles.
This led to Marcellus hosting its annual invitational meet on Saturday, with West Genesee and Jordan-Elbridge part of the field, and here Benson would make even more noise for the Wildcats.
In the 1,500, Benson not only won, but her time of 4:41.84 was the quickest in all of New York State so far this season. Among the chasing pack was Matkoski (5:09.60) in fourth place as Benson also would prevail in the 800 in 2:21.56, with Weaver in sixth place.
The Wildcats also saw Pirro, Delia, Dunshee and Sarah Ferranti claim the 4×800 relay in 10:17.33, with Abby Uczen clearing 9’6” to win the pole vault. Delia finished second in the 400 sprint in 1:01.64, just behind Schalmont’s Samantha Reagan (1:00.96), and paired with Fox, Paone and Hannahan for fourth place (54.30 seconds) in the 4×100 relay.
Coon would make the home fans cheer, winning the 100 sprint in 13.16 seconds over Cicero-North Syracuse’s Sasha Pulaski (13.24 seconds). Coon also took third place in the 200 in 27.17 seconds, where J-E’s Julie Hines got fifth place, and tied for sixth in the high jump.
J-E’s lone victory came in the long jump, where Rebeka Blonski flew 16’6”, well clear of C-NS’s Javielle Fanizzi (15’11”) in second place, and Hines again took fifth place.
The Eagles’ Mary Elizabeth Dristle finished third in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:38.11, with the Mustangs’ Schyuler Strait in fifth in this event and teammate Haley Randall fifth in the 400 hurdles. Sylcox got fifth in the shot put, throwing it 30’5 ½”.
