To the editor:
I live in the Candlewyck neighborhood in the village of Baldwinsville. I took my dog for a walk at around 7:40 Tuesday morning. We walked down Carousel Lane and up Edgewood Drive. We spotted what appeared to be a water main break half way up Edgewood. There were cones set in place, so obviously someone “official” was aware of the situation. I walked the rest of the way home, and thought nothing more of what I’d seen.
About 9:15 a.m., my husband and I heard an unusual whooshing sound. Expecting the worst, we ran to each of our bathrooms, convinced one had sprung a leak. We couldn’t find any water problem in the bathrooms, but when we checked the pipes in the basement, we heard gurgling sounds in our main drains.
Our first thought was to call a plumber, then we remembered the water main break. I immediately called the water department. There was a recorded message telling me to call a second number. I called the second number and got no answer. I next called the highway department. The spokesperson there confirmed that the water main break repair required the Carousel Lane water supply be turned off, and thought we had been notified. No, we had not. Interestingly enough, the spokesperson lives in this same neighborhood and was able to shower and do dishes in anticipation of losing water.
In this day and age of high-tech communication, I cannot believe there is no system in place to alert village residents to events such as these.
Just sayin’.
