To the editor:
I would like to recognize the efforts of M&T Bank located at 3945 Route 31, Clay, as being a leading example of correctly illuminating the American flag displayed 24 hours a day in the front of their office.
In the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist bombings in New York City, the American flag became a symbol of strength, resolve and unity for Americans everywhere.
Those of us over 12 at the time can probably remember the country was awash in red, white and blue for weeks afterwards. It was a time when Americans once again became aware of their common bonds and the feeling of national pride was exemplified in displaying of and respect for the American flag.
Since that time the flag has faded from view in most places and in others has been left to fly in tattered conditions, incorrectly displayed or alone at night in the darkness.
United States Code Title 4 Chapter 1 states: It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
Thank you M&T for your efforts to proudly display our nation’s flag for all to see and do so in a way that is respectful to all those past and present that gave so much to keep it flying.
