To the editor:
With the primary over, the election process now turns to November and a full ballot of choices. This time, those choices will involve more than just elected positions and it appears that a large number of voters are unaware of that.
A very important proposition will appear on the ballot: should New York State hold a Constitutional Convention? It will be up to voters to approve or disapprove but little has been done to inform the public of the ramifications of such a vote. Yes, you may notice signs up urging a “No” vote but the signage offers no reasons. Each individual voter needs to find out why.
The Manlius Democratic Committee has taken the initiative to address this. On Sept. 12 at the Fayetteville Free Library, the committee sponsored an Open Forum to discuss the issue. It was open to the general public. It will be repeated on two occasions, Oct. 18 at the Minoa Village Hall and on Oct. 23 at the Manlius Library. Both presentations begin at 7 p.m.
The ramifications of holding such a convention in terms of changes affecting the pensions of New York state residents, opening up the Adirondack Land Trust, challenging free public education, etc., in addition to a huge cost to stage this should be of concern to all New Yorkers.
We encourage voters to mark their calendars and attend these forums. They are open to the general public.
