To the editor:
We moved into Fayetteville just over six and a half years ago.
Since my political party is sure their candidate will win New York in the upcoming election, it chose not to provide free presidential candidate yard signs, thus expending the funds in critical swing states. I got my Clinton/Kaine sign through the mail after a nominal donation to cover the costs.
The sign was one of those three-piece metal frame affairs that forms a “U,” then you slip the actual sign over the frame, and you push the metal legs into your lawn.
My sign had been up, completely within my yard, for two and a half weeks.
On the first day, someone bent one of the metal legs to the ground. Similar events occurred ever other day or so. I would straighten out the leg or legs and, a day or two later, the sign would again be bent to the ground.
Today, as I was leaving my home, I noticed only one of the metal legs remained.
I shall not say I believe the Trump camp stands for and encourages this kind of behavior because I do not believe this to be the case. I must say I was astonished it happened in my neighborhood. The regularity of the incidents leads me to believe it was a neighbor or a frequent visitor.
I could philosophize and complain that this is not why I wore a military uniform for over 20 years; that my service was, in part, to insure free elections, Freedom of Speech, etc. I shall not because I believe the vast majority of my friends, neighbors and members of my community will be as saddened over this kind of behavior as I.
I believe this was my intention in communicating with you. I am getting old. I am proud of my life and my service; however, at this moment I am deeply saddened.
