Eastern Bluebirds — the State Bird of New York — had been on the decline in recent years. The birds nest in cavities in trees such as in holes created by woodpeckers; but because of land development there was a shortage of natural nesting sites, resulting in decreased populations. Thanks to the efforts of dedicated individuals and agencies though, bluebird populations are on the rise once again.
Is there anything you can do to support the resurgence of these beautiful birds? That will be the topic of conversation at an upcoming event on Saturday, March 21, at the Northern Onondaga Public Library (NOPL) at Cicero. From 10 to 11 a.m., a NYS Environmental Educator will discuss Citizen Science and conservation efforts being used to save the bird.
Following the program will be a Bluebird Nest Box Workshop at 11:15 a.m. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to build their own nest box to take home. Providing the right conditions for the birds to nest is something that can easily be done to make a positive contribution to conservation, and since bluebird pairs will soon be house-hunting, now is a great time to give them a place to raise their young.
Registration for the workshop is required and there is a $5 fee that covers the cost of supplies, which are all provided. To register, visit nopl.org/events or call 315-699-2032.
