After several successful seasons, a new series of Encore! Creative Aging programs are set to return to the Northern Onondaga Public Library (NOPL) at Cicero thanks to a 2018 Community Arts Grant from CNY Arts.
NOPL’s Encore! Creative Aging programs are workshops specifically designed to offer instruction to people over 50 years old. The educators that lead the classes are professionals in their fields, and they have received additional training that qualifies them to teach and engage older adults.
Both Encore! workshops this season consist of an eight-week series of classes culminating in a reception that provides students with an opportunity to share their work.
“The Play’s the Thing” is the first of the two Encore! courses and will be led by experienced actor and director Dan Stevens. It will focus on 20th-century play reading and production, providing students with plenty of opportunity for creative expression. Classes in this series will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and will begin on March 13.
The second course is “Learn the Basics of Watercolor,” an introductory watercolor painting course led by local art mentor Laurie Schillawski. Students in this program will learn about paints, tools and techniques to build a solid foundation from which they can begin creating. This series will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Fridays and will begin on March 30.
Class sizes are limited and advance registration is required. For more information about Encore! Creative Aging Workshops or to enroll, visit nopl.org/encore or call NOPL Cicero at (315) 699-2032.
