Three-quarters of The Big D Orchestra should feel mighty comfortable opening the Liverpool Public Library’s Winter Music series at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21.
Bandleader Dave Schnieider, singer Sharon Allen and pedal and lap steel guitarist George Newton performed in the Carman Community Room as part of Skip Murphy and the Merry Pranksters, the big, happy ensemble that opened the Fall Music series last September.
This time around, they’ll be part of a fearless foursome, joined by John Dancks on bass. The Big D Orchestra will take on a set that centers around roots and blues music.
This year’s LPL Winter Music series will put the focus on the vocalist.
The Origins of Jazz Series: The Jazz Singer will run with one Sunday show a month through April, with all concerts at 2 p.m. in the Carman Community Room.
The lineup is full of recognizable names to fans of CNY music:
• Feb. 18: Vocalist Ronnie Leigh will team with guitarist Marcus Curry on Feb. 18;
• March 18: Singer Julie Falatico will perform with pianist Rick Montalbano on March 18
• April 15: Kirsten Tegtmeyer will sing with group E.S.P.
Leigh and Curry will combine for bebop and other cool jazz tunes. Falatico and Montalbano will mix swing and standards. Tegtmeyer, with John Magnante on guitar and Matthew Vacanti on bass, will perform “jazz vocals for the future.”
The series is presented in partnership with the Liverpool Is the Place committee.
