What does it mean to be an American in the 21st century? What does a model American do, and what responsibilities do Americans have to their communities and each other? How have the answers to these questions changed over the history of the United States?
These questions will be explored in the “American Politics & Community Today” reading and discussion series that will be held at the Northern Onondaga Public Library (NOPL) at North Syracuse.
An orientation for the series begins from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18. Reading materials will be available for pickup at this time. Five discussion dates will follow the orientation session, all of which will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays. The dates are as follows: Oct. 16, Nov. 13, Dec. 11, Jan. 15, and Jan. 29.
The series is based on selected novels, essays and non-fiction works that explore politics and the current state of civic thought, feeling and participation, and it is designed to promote civic engagement, helping participants to learn from others with different viewpoints and gain insight from them through dialogue.
This program is free and open to the public, but space is limited so registration is recommended. For more information, please contact NOPL at North Syracuse Library at (315) 458-6184. The library is located at 100 Trolley Barn Lane, North Syracuse.
This reading and discussion series is made possible through a grant from Humanities NY.
