Elden Elementary School is pleased to announce the completion of another successful season for its Girls on the Run team.
Girls on the Run is a non-profit program for girls in grades three through five designed to teach girls the benefits of running, through healthy decision-making lessons. The girls are taught life skills through interactive lessons and games.
The girls met after school twice a week in small teams for ten weeks. At Elden, the curriculum was taught by 13 volunteer certified Girls on the Run coaches and included three parts: understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork, and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large.
Running is used to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence through accomplishment. Important social, psychological and physical skills and abilities are developed and reinforced throughout the program.
On June 4, the girls and their running buddies completed Paiges’s Butterfly Run 5K, which gave them a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. The night before the race, the team held a pasta dinner to bring all the girls, running buddies and coaches together to celebrate their hard work.
As part of the community service component of the program, the team “adopted” the Baldwinsville Volunteer Center for the month of May. The girls helped out at home for family, friends and neighbors to earn money to purchase items in need this time of year at the BVC: paper products, baby supplies, cleaning products and hygiene items.
The girls and coaches would like thank the following for their support of the program: Mrs. Elizabeth Dreyfuss, council director, Mrs. Cindy Mueller, program administrator, Mr. Tony Cardamone, principal at Elden, Mrs. Debbie Anselment, school secretary, Sal and Meow LoMedico of Sal’s Pizza for their generous donation of pasta, and the Baldwinsville United Methodist Church for hosting their dinner.
