Student seeks help for SPCA
By Madison Dubach
If you had to guess how many animals there were in the United States that are currently in an animal shelter, what would you say?
Annually, 7.6 million animals enter a new shelter, and sadly, 3 million of those animals never find a home. The abuse that animals suffer at human hands is heartbreaking, sickening, and infuriating.
As hard as it is to think about, we can’t stop animals suffering if we simply look the other way and pretend it isn’t happening. In the United States alone there are about 13,600 animal shelters.
In Auburn, New York, we have an animal shelter called the Finger Lakes SPCA.
This small organization takes the time to help animals recover from abuse and neglect.
They are not funded by local governments but rely on the donations made by community members. They are in dire need of supplies to continue supporting these homeless animals.
They need non-clumping litter, Purina or Purina One dog and kitty chow, and bath towels. Additionally, the SCPA is also in need of cleansing supplies. They are looking for 55 gallon trash bags, liquid bleach, and antibacterial hand soap.
If you’re not looking to donate actual supplies to a shelter, you can also bring your redeemable bottles and cans to the SCPA.
The SPCA is also always looking for new members to help with the animals, fundraise, or just show support. When you donate or help an animal shelter that means that you have decided to open your hearts and help those who cannot help themselves.
There will be a donation box for items that will be sent to the Auburn SPCA. It will be located in the lobby of Skaneateles High School and donations will be accepted from 7:15 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. or from 2:30-3:15 p.m. Monday, May 2 through Friday, May 6.
Please visit the Finger Lakes SPCA website for a full list of needed items. Thank you.
Skaneateles High School tenth grader Madison Dubach is asking students to donate items for the Finger Lakes SPCA the week of May 2-6. She wrote the article, below, for an assignment in Andy Tidd’s English class.
