Leonard G. Sherwood, 88, of Camillus, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2023, after a brief illness. Born in Syracuse, he was a lifetime resident of the Camillus area. Len was the first Eagle Scout of Troop 73 in 1951. He went on to graduate from Camillus High School in 1952 and Albany College of Pharmacy in 1956. Len was the third generation of pharmacists following his grandfather, Leonard A., and father Gifford A., owning and operating Sherwood Pharmacy in the village of Camillus until it closed in 1985. He then went on to work for Rite Aid Pharmacy and retired in 1994.
Leonard married his high school sweetheart, Jane Griffin, in 1957. He enjoyed SU sports, deer hunting, snowmobiling, antique autos, coin collecting and traveling, especially motor homing and spending winters in Juno Beach, FL. Len also grew tomatoes for the garden show at the New York State Fair, where he often won a blue ribbon. His proudest accomplishment was that he was a charter member of the Camillus Elks Lodge #31 and was lovingly known as #7. Len was also treasurer for 11 years and a trustee for five. He was a man with a strong work ethic, generous with community support and benevolence, who was well known as the pharmacist behind the counter at Sherwood’s.
Leonard was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Jane; father, Gifford Sherwood; mother, Mildred Sherwood; brother, Sheldon, during the Korean war in 1952; and grandson, Jacob Sherwood Grome.
Surviving are his children, Stacey Sherwood of Juno Beach, FL, Scott Sherwood of Park City, UT, Sherri (James) Diamond of Syracuse, and Kristin (Phillip) Grome of Camillus; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
